The Senate Bill that was passed this week might as well say to legal Americans, "Go to the back of the bus, and let the illegals take the front seats".
The United States isn't the only place having illegal immigration problems. We have discussed on this site before about the immigration problems in Europe and fellow blogger Adam Smith Institutereports on the situation in the UK:
A couple of weeks ago, the news media reported – with some quite justified astonishment – the evidence of Dave Roberts (the so-called Head of Enforcement of Removals Dept at the Home Office) to the Home Affairs Committee. Roberts admitted that he did not have the 'faintest idea' how many illegal migrants were living and working in the United Kingdom. But some equally astonishing evidence, by Jonathan Portes (Chief Economist of the Department of Work and Pensions) went largely unreported.Mr Portes seemed – well, a bit blasé about the immigration issue (which, as I reported earlier on this blog, is the number one issue among the UK public – if not, it seems, with civil servants). ... But when you have a generous welfare state then inevitably you need some form of control on who gets access to it.
Mark Steyn sums up the Senate Bill on immigration:
... this bill moves not just legal immigrants but U.S. citizens to the back of the bus. The undocumented guys only have to pay taxes for any three out of the last five years? How come Americans can't get a deal like that? Meanwhile, any attempt to enforce the border requires "consultation" with Mexico. Vicente Fox has just got his own permanent Security Council veto in the Department of Homeland Security. I think it's very hard for conservatives to support a Congress that would pass such a bill. Aside from the entitlement explosion and the national security issues, this bill is a cynical corruption of the integrity of US sovereignty and citizenship.
I'm in Tennessee and was glad to see that Lamar Alexander voted "nay" on the Senate Bill. But Volunteer Voters has this to say about Senator Alexander:
Using That Darn Exclamation Point AgainOh, here it is comes. The outpouring for Lamars "no" vote on the immigration bill. Please.
Lamar, he ain't no dummy is he? When the people are engaged he sure knows where to be and sure knows how loud to be about it.
Lamar is about as pro-immigration as a pol can be. He's hooked up with the business community all to heck. Yet there he is both on Steve Gill here in Nashville and on the air in Knoxville as well.
The like ONE time he votes well on immigration and he's all over the media. Of course, when they finally pass something and the heat gets off the issue them he'll go back to votin' how he usually do.
Big ups, Lamar. You're a smart one. Don't think I am the only one on to you, though. You're not that slick. I hope you have primary opposition in '08, my friend.
The Cranky Insomniac has a great post on big government, power and being 'above the law': " Dr. Strangelaw or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Hate the Congress"
I was surprised at the specific "justification" our lawmakers have given for being above the law, but not at all shocked that they consider themselves above the law. Here's why:
The more powerful a government is, the more powerful government positions are.The more powerful goverment positions are, the more they attract the kind of people who enjoy the feeling and trappings of power.
The more people enjoy the feeling and trappings of power, the more likely it is that they will use any means necessary to keep themselves in power.
The more people will use any means necessary to keep themselves in power, the more likely they are to eventually consider themselves above the law.

I have serious doubts about conservatism when I wander around the blogosphere. I was hopping around and landed on the top story at California Conservative (and cross posted at LetFreedomRingBlog)entitled, “Chill Out Dude”. Gary is writing about a memo circulated within the RNC by Matthew Dowd (did you get this memo? i didn’t either. guess we don’t rate, eh?) - and all the research supports the whimps in the RNC anyway, so, what’s new? Welcome to Wachingtun DC, where’s the pork, eh?
My Country - My View deals with a very important subject. "To Fight Or Not To Fight?"
I have been getting a lot of heat from certain people who will not be named . I am told that a real Christian would not support in the fight against illegal immigration. Let me put it like this. If someone comes into your home uninvited eats your food, takes your money steals your job and even your identification; as a Christian what would you do? If you see someone breaking the law as a Christian what would you do?

Thanks, I think you have a great blog also. You have some good posts on illegal immigration. We have to do our part to keep this in the minds and hearts of Americans.
