Your world today ... feeling helpless
Israel and the international peacekeeping force:
"Israel Encouraging Muslim Countries to Send Peacekeepers to Lebanon": BRUSSELS, Belgium — Israel said Saturday it was encouraging some Muslim countries to send peacekeepers to southern Lebanon, a contribution that would lend credibility to the heavily European force. [snip]
Israel, however, objects to nations that do not recognize the Jewish state, saying such troops would make it impossible for Jerusalem to share intelligence with the U.N. force. That would exclude Indonesia, Bangladesh and Malaysia, which have offered troops. source
On the possibility that North Korea will conduct an underground nuclear test in the very near future:
"North Korea Won't Rule Out Nuclear Test": SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea would not rule out a nuclear test if the United States maintained what it called a hostile policy, a pro-Pyongyang newspaper said Saturday, as the communist nation warned of "all possible countermeasures" against the U.S. (more)
"Ahmadinejad makes sense", from Don Suber:
President Bush ought to tell John Bolten and Condoleezza Rice to pound salt and accept whack job's reasoning. Iran is going to go nuclear and there is very little the United States can do about it except look like an impotent bag of wind. Confronting Iran without the ability or will to actually do something about it shows the Arab world that U.S. is a paper tiger. [snip]
Bush needs to think outside the box because Iran has the United States boxed in.(more)
The changing face of warefare as seen by Daniel Pipes:
Warfare in recent decades has turned historic assumptions upside down. Countries used to be the enemy; now regimes are the enemy, while their subject peoples are our friend. Battlefield superiority used to be the goal, now it is assumed before a shot is fired. Victory used to be the goal, now it’s peace. Promoting one’s own interests was the exclusive goal, now helping the defeated is no less important. Victors used to plunder the vanquished; now victors fund the defeated. Rooting for one’s own side was once assumed, while helping the enemy was treasonous; now, allegiance has become a legitimately open question. (more)
Iran's Backyard: Britain's Chatham House has released a report, "Iran, its Neighbors, and Regional Crises" (.pdf), that bluntly states that, as a result of the US's elimination of its chief regional rivals, the regimes of Iraq's Saddam Hussein and the Afghan Taliban, "there is little doubt that Iran has been the chief beneficiary of the war on terror in the Middle East." [snip]
How the US could enhance its soft power in the region and beyond is the frequent subject of the work of among others, co-blogger Suzanne Nossel, and her Democracy Arsenal colleague Shadi Hamid.
"There is no War on Terror." from Islamanazi"
There are only two countries that are of real terrorist concern to the United States. The first is Iran, which will soon have nuclear weapons and will use them or the threat of them to dominate the Middle East militarily and politically. [snip]
Target Number Two is Saudi Arabia, which supplied Osama Bin Laden and most of the 9/11 hijackers and continues to be the primary source of funding and recruits for Al Queda. Saudi Arabia is the home of Wahabbi Islam, the most vicious and evil form of Islam. (more)
"Catholics and the War On Terror", from One Jerusalem
Remember a few years ago when an Institute at Notre Dame University wanted to employ the grandson of the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood? For background read Daniel Pipes for some background.
Remember when Georgetown University accepted $20 million dollars from a Saudi Prince?
Well Joe Mowbray remembers and he makes some interesting connections in today's Washington Times. Mowbray reminds us that Georgetown's Professor John Esposito is an apologist for Dr. Azam Tamimi who recently defended Muslim suicide bombers as he declared in Manchester,"We are Muslims in Europe, not European Muslims."
While average Catholics understand the threat of these Islamic terrorists Catholic institutions and the Church seem ignorant of the threat. They don't understand that the Muslims are at the Gates of Vienna once again. For those unfamiliar with the Battle of Lepanto I recommend reading Chesterton's Lepanto.
