British arrest at least 14 young British Muslims of Pakistani origin on terror charges

The Brits will be holding a news conference this morning to officially announce the arrest of 14 terror suspects.  Around 40 police surrounded a Chinese restaurant in south London around 10 pm Friday night.  Early Saturday morning another raid was carried out in south-eastern England, resulting in an additional 2 arrests.  And, no surprise to anyone, around 100 officers raided an Islamic school in Tunbridge Wells in Kent. 

The Brits are going after 'not just terrorists, not just attackers, but the people who might be tempted to support or encourage...'.   Well glory be and hallelujah!  Take note Americans.

Those arrested were suspected of commissioning, instigating and preparing attacks, Scotland Yard said.

The operation was planned for months, a police spokesman said, and had no connection with recent arrests of suspects in an alleged plot to blow up passenger planes bound for the US from Britain.

He added that the arrests also had nothing to do with the suicide attacks on London's Underground in July 2005 which killed 52 people.

Meanwhile Scotland Yard's anti-terror chief Peter Clarke has told the BBC that thousands of people in Britain are under police surveillance on suspicion of terror links.

"Not just terrorists, not just attackers, but the people who might be tempted to support or encourage," he said.  source

And just who are these suspected terrorists arrested today?  They are 'young British Muslims of Pakistani origin'. 

Detectives are carrying out searches at at a large number of residential properties across London -  arrested under the Terrorism Act 2000 after months of surveillance involving Scotland Yard's Anti-Terrorist Branch and MI5.  ...

"Part of the investigation will focus on the alleged training, recruitment and encouraging of others to take part in terrorist acts," a source said. "It is very early days and we do not know where this will take us until we do all the searches."

However, another security source went further and suggested those allegedly involved may not just have been recruiting and training suspects, but actually plotting an attack.  source
