According to a European diplomat, Iran has been given yet another deadline, early October, "new talks between Solana and Iranian negotiator Ali Larijani would bear fruit". So yet another deadline given, and probably broken by Iran. What does Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad say about the talks? "Nuclear talks are on the right path." Yeah, for Iran.
Bush -- “I’m not going to discuss with you our intelligence on the subject, but time is of the essence”, Bush said, when asked on CNN whether he backed the Israeli line that only a few months remained before Iranian scientists learned how to enrich uranium -- the critical step towards building a bomb.“I’m concerned that Iran is trying to stall, and to try to buy time, and therefore it seems like a smart policy is to push this issue along as hard as we can, and we are”, Bush said. source
Well, that sounds just hunky-dorey, but exactly when is the deadline? Exactly what will be done if they reject that deadline again? Zilch, nada, bumpkus, zero, .... Oh maybe they will move the line in the sand, once again.
“There is a really excellent opportunity for Iran to engage with the international community, if it will simply meet a condition [freezing uranium enrichment]”. French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy said major powers -- Britain, China, France, Germany, Italy, Russia and the United States -- agreed that Iran must respond rapidly. “We must have a response fairly quickly,” he said, “it’s becoming urgent”.
Here is what Ahmadinejad said, "“It may take 100 years or more to gain confidence in what we do. What are we supposed to do given the context of the past 27 years that has been demonstrating such hostility towards our nation?”
Wednesday, September 27, 2006, Ahmadinejad vowed that Iran will NOT give up it's nuclear program, so there really is no purpose in these talks except for Iran to gain more time.
Here's an excerpt from an article by Ahmadinejad's translator at the United Nations, pretty interesting:
Nuance in Persian is difficult to translate, but it can be most misleading—sometimes comically so—during interviews with the American press. When Brian Williams of NBC asked about Mr. Ahmadinejad’s attire—a suit rather than his trademark windbreaker—the Iranian president replied, “Sheneedem shoma kot-shalvaree hasteen, manam kot-shalvar poosheedam”—which was translated as “ … you wear a suit, so I wore a suit.” The phrase is actually much closer to “ … you are a suit, so I wore a suit.” source
I would have asked him, "Do you even own a nice black suit, white shirt, and tie?" ha
He has got to be the worst dressed leader of any country, except maybe for the red-shirt wearing Hugo Chavez.

For a while I was pretty sure that Bush was going to put his money where his foolishly grinning mouth is and bomb the bastards, but I've given up on it. I think he keeps mouthing aggressive "We're gonna get 'em" stuff purely for the ratings and that the reality is that he'll do absolutely nothing. If he proves me wrong I'll immediately post an apology on my blog. But I think I'm safe. Wish I weren't.....
