United Nations, going, going, gone?

Americans are fed up with the United Nations and want America to pull out. Apparently John Bolton agrees. 'The United States should give the United Nations until the end of the year to reform and then consider cutting back on its U.N. dues if the changes fall short, U.S. Ambassador John Bolton said on Monday'.

"Is good management and lack of corruption too much to ask for?" he asked, calling the United Nations "severely challenged from a management and accountability point of view." The United States, one of 192 member-nations, now pays about a quarter of the U.N. budget.

And I think our determination and our objectives are very clear to all of the other U.N. members, and I think they can calculate the stakes if reform does not succeed."

Money money money money .... MONEY!!! I say keep that money here in the United States and use it for good, not for terrorists/pedophiles/rapists/thieves.

Unless the UN can show marked improvement in accountability and performance, Americans will not hesitate to demand the US government pull the plug on the UN.

A majority of Americans (57%) now believe the United Nations should be scrapped and replaced if it cannot be reformed and made more effective. That result is from an extensive national benchmark survey about the UN on the 5th anniversary of 9/11, conducted by
Luntz Maslansky Strategic Research. The survey was released today at a Hudson Institute conference, "The UN and Beyond: United Democratic Nations."

-- 75% believe the UN is no longer "effective" and "needs to be held more
accountable."

-- 71% believe the UN "needs to be considerably reformed."

-- 67% believe "there are too many undemocratic nations in the UN that do
not care about promoting democracy and freedom."

-- Only 37% believe the UN is "effective in PREVENTING wars and military
conflicts."

-- Only 32% believe the UN is "effective in ENDING wars and military
conflicts."

-- It is therefore not surprising that 71% of the population want America
to cut its financial contribution to the UN. A majority from every
geographic, demographic, attitudinal and political subgroup wants to
see reductions in American funding.source

Five years after the September 11, 2001 attacks on America, Gates of Vienna compares al-Qaeda to the United Nations in "Is Al Qaeda the New UN?.

Don’t you think that Zawahiri would rather have marked the fifth anniversary of 9-11 with a major attack on the West, preferably the United States? Instead we get yet another Al Qaeda propaganda video.

It could be a slogan on a terror-camp T-shirt: “September 11th Came And Went And All I Got Was This Lousy Video”.

Al Qaeda is starting to sound like the UN, issuing warnings in the face of events they disapprove of. Next thing you know they will be expressing Grave Concern, or Studying the Situation. They may even consider sanctions against the infidels, or convene a special commission to look into our offensive behavior.

They go on talking about the slick look of al-Qaedas new production company with fake backdrops, 'that’s the way Al Qaeda is beginning to look: a hollow media event, staged solely for the cameras'.

Pamela of Atlas Shrugs says, "SAY NO TO UNITED NATIONS REFORM" after attending the Hudson Institute Symposium "THE UN AND BEYOND: UNITED DEMOCRATIC NATIONS" where she listened to some of the best minds explore, debate, recount, and deservedly excoriate the history of UN failures. You can go read it all, but she concludes that, 'Five years after 9/11 the UN is still unable to define terrorism'.

I thought I had a good idea of how debased that organization was. I was wrong. From the outset the UN set out to fail. They have failed the tortured, the oppressed, the poor, in incalcuable ways. The graft and corruption is endemic to the institution.

The premise of the discussion was could the UN be reformed and save the lone voices the consensus from the best minds was no. The alternative? A different organization. "The United Democratic Nations," an organization of free nations. Shared values. This seems to be one of the malignancies of the UN. How can democracies and dictatorships co-exist in a world body successfully. They can't. And so immediately the organization is/was destined to fail.

That is absolutely correct. How can the worst of terrorist nations and the best of free nations all have the same say and equal footing in an organization like the United Nations, and accomplish anything worthwhile? They can't. A group of like-minded countries working together against the countries left at the United Nations would be a wonderful idea.

Let's get out now!

UPDATE: Overnight many other bloggers reported on the situation at the United Nations. I would like to share some that are worthy of your time and add to my humble post:

Debbie,

Haloscan is 'acting up' right now...I'll send a ping later today.

Sorry.

The truly sad part of this poll is that 37% actually believe the UN is capable of preventing wars and 32% think they can end them. What are these people smoking? 1/3 of the nation lives in some make believe world where truth need not apply.

The ultimate oppression. We will not fund your jihad.

If the US can get Japan and the other major donors to the UN to do likewise this would send the message ...

If this is the kind of corrupt, impotent organization you want ... fine ... fund it yourself!

From Bolton's mouth to the ear of all of America! I would love to see this happen, sooner rather than later. I've been hoping to see it happen since I was 6 or 7 years old, so that's more than 50 years!

Man, it would be such FUN to watch the Hezbollah-crats heads exploding when this took place!

Thanks for sharing and adding a lot of information to this post everybody. Do go read Rastaman's post also.

Are The Terror Outfits Getting Legitimacy?

If the recently concluded war between Israel and the outfit Hezbollah is anything to go by, it looks like the terror outfits are getting legitimized. By mediating between a nation state on the one hand and an independent outfit on the other which is not accountable or responsible to any international body, isn't the UN indirectly legitimizing the outfit?

The very fact that the Lebanese military was missing in action throughout the 34 day war is a proof that this fight had nothing to do with any Lebanese cause, something for which the Lebanese government stood. Otherwise how can a national military stand mute witness to another nation invading its territory, leave alone bombing its towns and cities?

It would have been alright if the Lebanese military had fought this war, because as national government it can be expected to comply with the UN mandates. Or else they can be subjected to various sanctions and embargoes. However, an outfit that does not even recognize any international body, can never be reined. There is nothing official in Hezbollah that can be reined in.

Has Hezbollah proved itself to be a responsible outfit that UN thought of mediating and asking for a dialogue? Can UN bring about a real truce by binding an independent outfit with conditions? Ironically the UN is mediating for an outfit which has over the last two years blatantly disregarded its Security Council resolution 1559 of September 2004. Weapons, let alone war, in the hands of any such outfit can be very dangerous because they act unilaterally at their whims and fancies.

Tomorrow will the UNSC have the same approach towards Al-Qaeda, a Sunni Islamist organization. The most prominent members of the group are adherents of he fundamentalist sect of Sunni Islam- Salafism, just as Hezbollaz is a Shi’ite one. And because Al-Qaeda has its presence in Afghanistan, will it be allowed to procure weapons and fight a war? Haven't they proved themselves to be a terror outfit than a responsible organization.

Whether UN puts restrictions on Hezbollah and Al-Qaeda or not, these outfits will go ahead and procure and amass weapons; but by mediating and asking for a dialogue, hasn't UN legitimized them?

The U.N. has to go... Here's my last post with a great article you might want to check out.

Stop on by sometime! :)

Okay now, everybody close their eyes and imagine they are looking out the huge balcony window of their new condo at a vast, expansive view of Manhattan from the former UN building. Or try this?

NY Times Bulletin: United Nations building converted into a sanctuary for abused women and children.

How about: UN Building remodeled into a hospital serving injured veterans of the anti-terror wars and the 9/11 attacks.

Yeah, I like the last one best.
