It is an accepted statement that the United States supports Israel. But within the United States, which political party, Democrats or Republicans, are more supportive of Israel and Jewish matters? In the past the majority of Jewish votes went to Democrats, but that may be changing because of recent events in Lebanon and now possibly the 'common good' goal of Democrats.
Carl in Jerusalem writing at Israel Matzav, says:
When I was growing up in the US, it was almost gospel that if you were Jewish you voted Democratic. The Democrats were the party that supported Israel (Harry Truman recognized the Jewish state over many objections) and the separation of church and state, while the Republicans were the party that was 'too Christian,' and was also considered to be less interested in Israel, or worse. Not to mention that most Jews agreed with the Democrats on most other 'social issues.'Over the last 25-30 years, that has started to change, as parts of the 'liberal agenda' on social issues became more widely accepted, as many Jews came to believe that Republican economic policies (Reaganomics and its progeny) were better suited for them personally than was the welfare state, and as the two parties started to compete for the pro-Israel vote. As an American Jew to whom support for Israel was issue number one, I voted for Ronald Reagan in 1980 (and would have voted for Richard Nixon in 1972 if I'd had the right to vote then), because I felt that the Democratic candidate that year (Dhimmi Carter and George McGovern, respectively) was not pro-Israel, and would have sold this country down the river had they been given the opportunity. For the record, I still lived in the US then. ...
Furthermore, the results of two polls taken in July 2006 show that support for Israel among Republicans is significantly higher than the support among Democrats, even though most Jews still vote Democratic. (read more)
The Democrats finally have a battle cry, the 'common good'.
Agenda for the Common Good: Be Damned at Wake Up America:
In the course of history politicians have used this catch phrase, and in every instance, the goal behind this disgusting expression, is to relate the fact that it is going to hurt but it is "for the common good". For the good of the people. The people be damned then.At a San Francisco fundraiser in 2004- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., told wealthy supporters the government will need to take money away from them for the "common good." ..."We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good." ...
The common good be damned if that is how they are going interpret it. Since when is it acceptable to "punish" people that have worked hard to earn good money, for the common good?
Think about this when you cast your vote, "Can You Say -- Nancy Pelosi, President Of The United States?" Yes, the speaker of the House would be next in line for President if, heaven forbid, something happened to the President and the Vice President. Think about your feelings toward Israel and which party solidly supports her. Also think about this 'common good' policy and what it would mean to you, what it would mean to our country and our future.

"The common good" is part of the Communist Manifesto. Not that I think those spouting this new/old catch phrase are commies but they need to do some rethinking.
There are very few things that fall under our Common Good. One would be Border Security with 1000's of guards and fences loaded with sensors. Another would be paying off the National Debt through the simple expedient of STOPPING SPENDING LIKE DRUNKEN SAILORS, my apology to actual drunken sailors. Otherwise, "common good" is a catchphrase for sucking us dryer.
Both parties have had some unkind words lately for Israel, although the Democrats seem to be mouthier. I don't buy into anything any of them says anyway, since I put politics in the same genre as professional wrestling. What any of those pond scum say is BS, it's their voting records that count. No, I also care less about their voting records. My preference is that they do nothing since I believe them all incapable of doing no more than perpetuating their own jobs, and for at least the last 3 years I've gotten my wish. Until now.
The new Military Commissions Law is a giant step toward Fascism. Talk about perpeuating your job, this will sure do it for them.
But about the Jewish vote... If I were Jewish I would be taking a long look at both parties. The free-spending Republicans will take away my money. Yes, those same Republicans who used to be for small government and small spending have now gone totally fiscally ape. The Democrats are generally too far left, which means appeasing to Islam, which is sure as hell a bad thing for me. They spend too damn much too. I guess I would have to make a decision between the survival of Israel or the survival of my money. In the long run I would go for Israel but none of us enjoys personal sacrifice.
If I were a Jew I might be looking at one of the other, lesser parties to start backing.
