Illegals and the Gang Problem Hit Nashville

In case you didn’t know, Nashville is not just the Grand Old Opry. Walking the streets of Nashville you’d think you were in any other city. And just like any other, Nashville is now trying to reconcile the issue of illegal aliens and the gangs many of them are members of.
This was a Sunday front page (below the fold) story in Nashville’s paper The Tennessean. It’s a Liberal rag, so even getting this below the fold on the front is a shock.
Hispanic gangs bring feud, violence to Nashville streets
They’re responsible for disproportionate share of gang crime … And although Hispanic members are less than 10 percent of Nashville’s street gang population, they were responsible for about 45 percent of last year’s gang-related violence, police said. … It’s more common to see members of MS 13 or Mara Salvatrucha — traditionally from El Salvador or Honduras — in the country illegally. Often, they are deported for their crimes and quickly return to the U.S., Sgt. Kemper of the gang unit said.Experts believe an uptick in immigration and the movement of gangs from big cities to smaller, less gang-savvy cities have contributed to the growth of the street gangs throughout the country. Davidson County’s Hispanic population has grown more than 37 percent since 2000.
So if the borders are opened wider via amnesty and guest worker programs, what are the odds the Grand Old Opry will be defaced with gang graffiti? I say the odds will only increase.
Unfortunately, Nashville does not seem to be a town with people who put much stock in education.
Metro Nashville school officials have expressed concern about the high dropout rate among Hispanic students. While 60 percent of Metro students reach graduation, the rate of Hispanic students graduating within four years and getting a regular diploma is just 40 percent, said Paul Changas, director of assessment and evaluation for Metro schools.
The article makes it seem as if 60% is a good thing and of course 40% is terrible. It seems the free education that even children of illegals can get is not helping them do something good with their lives.

You know, there's actually another reason for this kind of activity. Prior to the US Supreme Court decision to ban the Bible in public schools, the most common complaints that teachers had about students was chewing gum, not paying attention, and tardiness. Today the most common complaints are rape, murder, and assault.
But hey, after all, we can't let such hate-filled literature as the Bible in public schools, can we? Why, children might actually learn something and emulate the morals conveyed! We certainly can't have that.

That's one of the things that bother me about the Republican party (and politics in general actually). The free market is allowed to control industries such as health care, pharmacology, media, etc, but not when it comes to education. Frankly, if free market principles were applied to our education system, we would see schools and teachers get better very quickly.
People could move their children to better schools without penalty. This would immediately serve to put bad schools on notice and they would have to get better teachers and institute better programs.
Public education is a monopoly right now. And it's our money that they are playing with.
