North Korea, Iran and Iraq, thorns in America's side

Literally moments after the United Nations unanimously passed a Security Council resolution imposing the sanctions on North Korea, more than one country boldly said they had no intentions of following through with what they had just endorsed. My question? What was the point, seriously?

China's UN ambassador has said it will not participate in a cargo inspections program that the resolution approves for detecting barred weapons and materials either leaving or entering the country. China, which worries about the impact of a destabilized North Korea, says such disruption of trade could have a deleterious impact on the entire region. [snip]

"The Security Council resolution will be the guiding document, but the US is going to be looking for tougher actions from South Korea in particular, and that could cause some frictions," says Chung-in Moon, a professor of political science at Yonsei University in South Korea and an ambassador for international security with the South Korean government.source

What was the point of the sanctions in the first place? To rid North Korea of their nuclear program? Nope, "For sanctions to be effective, they have to prevent further escalation,..." according to Michael Green, (who served as Asia director in the Bush National Security Council until December and is now at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington).

The resolution does not include the use of military force to require ships engaged in North Korean commerce to stop for inspection on the open seas - something the US first sought. And it whittles down a broad arms embargo originally envisioned to a focus on heavy-arms trade. [snip]

US officials indicate they hope to see the kind of action taken against North Korea reflected in steps against Iran. [snip]

The resolution also seeks to bring the international community in line with existing US efforts to curtail outlaw activities of the Kim regime such as counterfeiting and money laundering - primarily of US dollars. [snip]

Speaking with reporters on Friday, before accompanying Rice on her trip, Mr. Hill suggested the US will seek to deliver the same "unprecedented unanimity" in other cases by applying what works with respect to North Korea to other instances of proliferation.

But already Russia, which has a larger financial and geopolitical interest in Iran's evolution than with North Korea, is showing irritation at US tactics. source

When President George W. Bush and others say they will not accept a nuclear Korean peninsula, this U.N. resolution proves them wrong. They have already accepted a nuclear North Korea and are just trying to contain that program, ... trying to stop that nuclear program from growing, and trying to transfer the sale of that program or those devices to terrorists. Keep in mind that North Korea smuggles all sorts of contraband via their diplomatic pouches. What will keep them from transferring nuclear information or even materials via those same diplomatic pouches? Certainly NOT this United Nations resolution.

North Korea's nuclear weapons program is indeed reason for concern and alarm. However, while the world focuses the regime's future plans for its atomic bomb, the most hideous of acts are already being carried out:
THE North Korean regime's obsession with racial purity has led to the killing of disabled infants and forced abortions for women suspected of conceiving their babies by Chinese fathers, according to a growing body of testimony from defectors.

The latest description of Kim Jong-il's policy of state eugenics came from a North Korean doctor, Ri Kwang-chol, who escaped last year and told a forum in Seoul that babies with deformities were killed soon after birth.

The Voice of America is a news service of the U.S. government, paid for out of taxpayer's funds. Which makes it all the more reprehensible that it is shilling for radical Islam's leading American group, the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

General Sir Richard Dannatt, the new head of the British Army, has come closer than anyone ever has to articulating the positions we have long espoused here. He suggests that the Iraqi democracy project is "naive," and not only that ... he speaks about the weakness of relativist multiculturalism in the face of the jihadist threat, and the need for the West to recover its own cultural and spiritual resources before it's too late.

Congratulations to Fox News Channel for two specials Sunday night. One, War Stories with Ollie North which covered in depth the Islamic terrorists and Jihad, ... if and how the United States can win this war, and to his excellent guests including Walid Phares, Wafa Sultan, and others. Two, a special on North Korea with excellent history by a multitude of reporters.

Despite reports of China balking at inspecting North Korea's cargo trucks, they seem to be implementing the UN's resolution. ( Resolution 1718 can be found here. ) [Read More]
