Bolton doomed, Israel in the cross-hairs, politics as usual and Open Trackbacks

Just when the United States and Israel need a strong voice at the United Nations, when Iran's nuclear program is almost complete, some Republicans are joining with Democrats to keep John Bolton out. Iran is now training al-Qaeda terrorists and grooming al-Qaeda's #3 man while completing their nuclear program THIS YEAR.
A key Senate Republican has joined Democrats in opposing one of Bush's initiatives for the lame-duck Congress: John Bolton's nomination as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. ...
Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee, who was defeated in this week's election, said he would block Bolton's nomination.
Chafee, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, told reporters that he did not believe Bolton's nomination would move forward without his support.
"The American people have spoken out against the president's agenda on a number of fronts, and presumably one of those is on foreign policy," the Rhode Island moderate told The Associated Press.
"And at this late stage in my term, I'm not going to endorse something the American people have spoke out against."
The committee, dominated 10-8 by Republicans, requires a majority vote to send the nomination to the Senate floor. A tie would be the same as a no vote. (read more)
Excuse me, but I don't think there was anything about John Bolton on any election ballot and I don't remember him being a topic of campaign advertisements. There is not one person who could criticize the job John Bolton has done while at the United Nations. Senator Joe Biden said, "I see no point in considering Mr. Bolton's nomination again in the Foreign Relations Committee because, regardless of what happens there, he is unlikely to be considered by the full Senate."
As Tony Snow said, "You know, in this country, I thought you were rewarded for success,..." I guess not.
On the independent Iraq group headed up by former Secretary of State James Baker, Yid With Lid says:
One perplexing result of the Democratic win last week was for President Bush to start consulting with, an old family favorite former Secretary of State Baker and his Iraq Study Group (ISG) to help him with Iraq and middle east issues. While Baker served under Bush Sr., he has long been a favorite of Democrats like Pres. Clinton and Carter as well as Join Kerry. The reason: his pro Arab, anti-Israel policies. [snip]
You remember Jim Baker he was the one, when he was Secretary of State said, "F**K the Jews, they didn't vote for us anyway" Baker was also the one who during the first Gulf war told Israel to simply suck it up for the greater good and take Iraq's Scud attacks without responding. (read more)
Whether we are talking about Iraq, or Iran, or Syria, or Lebanon, or North Korea, or Israel, the United States should be united in one thing ... winning, coming out on top, on the side of freedom.
We must win this conflict, that’s something the Democrats sadly haven’t accepted yet and probably never will which is sad. --Right Wing Guy
Family Security Matters pulls no punches with this new article:
The West is at war with Islam, full stop. Convincing Islam to live in long term peace with the West, including Israel, is not possible. Talking them into the superiority of Western civilization, capitalism, prosperity, is not possible. The principles discussed in this article must be taken into account in every discussion of Israel's policies, the war in Iraq, national energy policy, and US and European legal policies regarding Muslims.
Can we please keep in mind what is actually going on between Islam and the West, without our minds being cluttered with the detritus of how we got here? The reason the war with Islam has caught fire is not about Israel's mistakes, the US failure to be an "honest broker" in serving up Israel's head on a platter, or "Bush lied!", or "neocons", or "incompetence in Iraq". The feelings which have coalesced into romantic pan-national Islamism have many roots, including tribalism and Muslim mistreatment of Muslims, not just the West's defeat of the Muslim caliphate. In any event, to just call to mind one historical analogy, does anyone at all say "Gee maybe WW II is America's fault because we embargoed oil against Japan forcing them to attack us at Pearl Harbor"? Japan was imperialistic, on a rampage through Asia, we embargoed oil, they attacked our fleet, and we fought them to unconditional surrender, flattening their country, I say again, flattening.
Strong words. What say you folks?
