The headline reads Democrats plan to take control of Iraq spending, but translated that means Dems will cut the budget for Iraq. If they can't get the troops out one way, they will try another and cutting resources is not a surprise. Their plan is to 'demand a better accounting of the war’s cost and move toward integrating the spending into the regular federal budget, a signal of their intention to use the Congressional power of the purse more assertively to influence the White House’s management of the war.'
I'm all for watching the federal budget. The Republicans have been spending like there is no tomorrow. When conservatives vote, we want politicians to be very careful with our hard-earned money. People talk about 'Washington' or the 'government' paying for this project or that project. The 'government' HAS NO MONEY. Taxpayers work hard for their money, they give way too much to the government and then have to pinch pennies to get along sometimes. We have budgets that we stick to.
Apparently the government thinks 'what's YOURS is THERES'. On the war, we have the responsibility to provide whatever is needed to get the job done, done quickly and done right. Our military deserve the best. But waste in Washington is pathetic. If the Democrats cut funding while our military is still in Iraq, this would be a disgusting move.
Congressional control over the money for the war is one of the most powerful weapons Democrats will have in trying to influence administration policy toward Iraq. They can use both the budget and subsequent spending bills to impose restrictions on how the money is spent and demand more information from the White House. While the leadership has repeatedly said it will not cut off money for military operations, senior Democratic officials said lawmakers were considering whether to add conditions to spending bills to force the administration to meet certain standards for progress or change in Iraq. Democrats have also said they intend to investigate spending and suspicions of corruption, waste and abuse in Iraq contracting. (read more)
According to NPR, 'Saudi Arabia has told the White House that if U.S. troops withdraw from Iraq, the Saudis may provide financial aid to Iraq's Sunni Muslim minority, according to a New York Times report.
The White House and the Saudis deny the story -- but it raises questions about Saudi Arabia's relationship with Iraq, a country with which it shares a large border.'
