Immigrants, this is what we expect of you
Oh boy, this town get's it. Herouxville, Quebec wants people to assimilate into their community. I love it!!! Hat Tip Angel:
A sign at the entrance of this rural Quebec town says: Herouxville welcomes you. Unless, that is, you plan on stoning a woman to death, sending your kids to school with a kirpan or covering your face other than on Halloween.
The town council of Herouxville, a sleepy town dominated by a towering Roman Catholic church, has adopted a declaration of "norms" that it says would-be immigrants should be aware of before they settle in this town.
Among them, it is forbidden to stone women or burn them with acid.
Children cannot carry weapons to school. That includes ceremonial religious daggers like kirpans even though the Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that Sikhs can carry kirpans in schools.
However, children can swim in a pool with other children - boys and girls alike because they can't be segregated.
And for the record, female police officers in Herouxville, 165 kilometres northwest of Montreal, can arrest male suspects. Also part of the declaration is to allow women to drive, dance and make decisions on their own.
"We're telling people who we are," said Andre Drouin, one of six town councillors and the driving force behind the declaration passed earlier this month. [snip]
According to the five-page declaration, in Herouxville children sing Christmas songs at Christmas and adults can drink alcohol.
Immigrants want to be part of Canada, Drouin said, and to do that they need to know what is acceptable and what isn't.
OK folks. What do YOU think about this???

I just noticed something from the quote I posted. According to Salam Elmenyawi, who is the president of the Muslim Council of Montreal, Islam is NOT the religion of Muslims!!!
Take a close look at that second paragraph:
"I was shocked and insulted to see these kinds of false stereotypes and ignorance about Islam and our religion..."
Why seperate Islam and "our religion" unless, of course, Islam is not the religion of the hate-mongering, infidel killing, suicide/homicide bombing, murderers?
Or is he just a fool that has no concept of how ridiculous he sounds?

I have no doubt you are right, JS. We will keep watch for more news on this community. Let me know if you hear anything about similar communities taking a stand.

It won't make a difference. Non-westerners can just continue to fill the town, lay low for a few years, and then when they have sufficient numbers, they will be the ones posting signs on how to behave.

I knew the negative press would start soon. Thanks for sharing Jason and everybody.

From: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/01/31/wquebec131.xml
"Salam Elmenyawi, president of the Muslim Council of Montreal, said the declaration had "set the clock back for decades" as far as race relations were concerned.
"I was shocked and insulted to see these kinds of false stereotypes and ignorance about Islam and our religion... in a public document written by people in authority who discriminate openly," he said."

What a wonderful town. Wish it were closer I would consider moving.

Debbie I would love to see this implimented across all our cities and towns here in the US. I think this is great!

Unfortunately, Jason is probably correct. Already some folks were out on the news saying how 'terrible' this was. I think it's wonderful. Let people know what you expect. if they don't like it, they can move somewhere else.

Darn those new strict laws...

I say spread that message far and wide! I love the "Children sing Christmas songs at Christmas" addition. Hallelujah!
But I'm afraid that Jason is right. I'll take it a step further though, and add that once the word is out someone may move there purposefully just to turn the tide. It wouldn't suprize me the least bit. After all isn't that what has been happening in the west, but on a much larger scale??

Jason
You're only correct if the town doesn't hold onto it's own values and gives into the Court system. One has to hold onto ones values and that means even against the Court system. It all is determined on how strong of will the town has as to whether or not you end up being right about it.

Not a bad start. Of course, it won't be long until someone moves there and then claims that the declaration is "racist", "islamophobic", or bigotted in some other way. Then the Canadian courts will get involved and rule against the town which, thanks to the monumental fines almost sured to be levied against it, the "offended" person will own the town.
