The bad U.S. going after innocent Iran
We cannot talk about Iraq these days without including Iran. There is no doubt that Iran is directly involved in the violence in Iraq. The commentary on Iran is varied, from one end of the spectrum to the other ... Today Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced that the Natanz nuke facilities will be expanded, yet some (see below) believe Iran is harmless and Israel/United States have nothing to fear. Others suggest the United States is planning to attack Iran right away.
President George W. Bush's address on Iraq Wednesday night was less about Iraq than about its eastern neighbour (sic), Iran. There was little new about the U.S.'s strategy in Iraq, but on Iran, the president spelled out a plan that appears to be aimed at goading Iran into war with the U.S. -- Dr. Trita Parsi, an Iranian expert at JH University and author of "Treacherous Triangle -- The Secret Dealings of Israel, Iran and the United States" (source IPS, via at-Largely)
Inside the U.S.:
Congressman Ron Paul, a Republican, is afraid that the Bush administration is going to stage a false flag operation, so the United States can attack Iran, and he said so in the House of Representatives last Thursday. The exact quote,
“The truth is that Iran, like Iraq, is a third-world nation without a significant military. Nothing in history hints that she is likely to invade a neighboring country, let alone America or Israel. I am concerned, however, that a contrived Gulf of Tonkin-type incident may occur to gain popular support for an attack on Iran.” (GNN)

Iraq's neighbors are all volunteering to "help" Iraq. I'm sure they all have their own reasons and the type 'help' some will be offering is the type that Iraq doesn't need ... ulterior motives, hmmmm?
Syria’s president promised to do what he could to ease tensions in neighbouring Iraq during a landmark visit by the country’s president Jalal Talabani, just days after US president George Bush accused Syria of backing Iraq’s uprising. [snip][Bashar] Assad expressed Syria’s readiness to help achieve national reconciliation as well as stability in Iraq and stressed his support for the political process under way in the neighbouring country, the state news agency said. An excellent related read, "Iraq, Viet Nam, and our national interest" at Rossputin
The main lesson I saw from Viet Nam was similar to the lesson of pointing a gun at someone: Don't do it unless you're willing to shoot him. [snip]The US (Bush and Rumsfeld) made the same mistake in Iraq by not sending enough troops early on, in my opinion, and by not increasing troop levels sooner when that became clear. [snip]
As a general matter, it seems to me that Democrats only support wars where we have no national interest, like Bosnia or Somalia, and don't support wars where we do have a national interest, like Kuwait or either World War. It is incredible to me how slow we were to get into WWII after the disasters we could have prevented in Western Europe by Wilson's spinelessness. (read more)
Blackfive on Bush:
I didn't watch the 60 minutes clip. I don't have to. [snip]What I have seen of Mr. George W Bush is that he is a Cowboy. Cowboys are brought up to tell the Truth. They are Men of few words, but those words are words of action. Most Yankees and city slickers have always thought Cowboys were slow and dimwitted, but they can fool ya'. Most Cowboys are shrewd judges of human character and the characteristics of animals.
They take care of women (not just ladies), children, and small dogs. They wear a pistol on their hip and they know how to use it, but they don't draw it until they absolutely need to. Cowboys are slow to anger. But once angered, they don't stop until the job is done. They will ride many miles in the cold, driven rain and sleet, never faltering in looking for their herd, and they will enter any cabin they find to shelter from the cold, but only after hailing the house, knocking on the door, announcing their presence, respecting the absent owner's furnishings, and leaving the place as they found it, or just a little better.
So let's examine if W fits this description:
Blackfive gives a nice breakdown, go read it all here.

No truer words: “As a general matter, it seems to me that Democrats only support wars where we have no national interest, like Bosnia or Somalia, and don't support wars where we do have a national interest, like Kuwait or either World War.” Not only are they spineless appeasers who masquerade as pacifists, underneath all this peaceful talk lies the truth – they really do hate imperialist America!

Anything can happen in the next two years, but I have a feeling that one of them is NOT an attack on Iran. I think Bush is much too focused now on Iraq. We'll see, anyway.
