Al-Qaeda announces a fatwa against any country supplying oil to the United States. This includes terrorist strikes against those countries. I'm hoping that includes Venezuela. Sorry, that was so tacky of me. Does this mean that al-Qaeda cannot strike the US directly, so they are going after other countries? Canada is specifically mentioned:
Al-Qaeda has called for terrorist strikes against Canada's oil and natural gas facilities to "choke the U.S. economy."An online message, posted by The Al-Qaeda Organization in the Arabian Peninsula, declares "we should strike petroleum interests in all areas which supply the United States ... like Canada," the No. 1 supplier of both fuels to the U.S.
The group, the Saudi arm of Osama bin Laden's terrorist network, claimed responsibility for a thwarted February 2006 suicide attack on the world's largest oil processing facility at Abqaiq in Saudi Arabia's eastern province. The group also is believed responsible for other attacks against the Saudi energy sector. (source)
Look out Chavez, I hope you are on al-Qaeda's radar.

Chavez is already lined up with Ahmadinejad, so that would seem to make him a target of AQ. All so confusing.

Hi! I just wanted to drop a note to tell you that I think Reuters, AP, etc are misreporting this statement. I've read the article in an English translation that is, unfortunately, not available to everyone.
First, it's not a fatwa as far as I can tell. Fatwas are in general more scholarly and religious. This is more like a typical al-Qaeda strategy document, very common from previous issues of Voice. Fatwas are scary because they give religious justifications for certain acts like the killing of civilians or the use of WMDs. This article uses no religious arguments.
Second, there is NO direct threat against Canadian oil infrastructure (or Mexican or Venezuelan for that matter). It's more of a general threat to oil infrastructure anywhere in the world. The direct threat is actually to energy infrastructure on the Eastern Arabian Peninsula. A key area, yes, but that areas has also been under direct threat since 2003. That's not news.
I hope this helps. I have a link to the Arabic version of the e-journal at my website link above.
Enjoy!

Maggie, I know that's bad, but I can't stand Chavez.
Jason, what a great idea. Plus we need to start drilling more of our own oil.

Hmmm The Israelis are already in the crosshairs, perhaps we should start supporting Zion Oil (http://www.zionoil.com/). The Israelis will still be targets, but at least we'll be getting our oil from friends and helping out Israel at the same time.

That was the talk around my place this a.m. - "maybe Chavez will get his". Without diminishing the threat, we know they've been trying to do this for years. Maybe it was a slow news day for the jihad website that put this out.
