Next terrorist attack on American children?

The belief among terrorism experts is that America will be attacked again, it's just a matter of time. Where and how this attack will come is the big question. Will it be buildings again, will the terrorists use airplanes, or suitcase nukes, or biological or chemical agents? What if their next target is our children?

That is exactly what some experts think. Remember the the 2004 Beslan school siege where 333 people died in the siege, more than half of them children, when pro-Chechen terrorists took more than 1000 people hostage in a small school in southern Russia. Laura Mansfield has reported on several incidents here in the United States that she calls 'dry runs' for taking over buses and schools where our children are vulnerable.

We have had Middle Eastern men getting on school buses dressed in trench coats in the middle of summer in Florida, testing security, and getting away with it. We have school bus drivers being hired without background checks. Today a Sahab Tape with Al Libi blaming the US, UK, and Libyan Governments for HIV Infected Children in Libya. If they actually believe propaganda like this, they would certainly want to harm our children in revenge. (Laura Mansfield)

Are we prepared for such an attack on our children? You can be sure the terrorists are preparing:

Reporting on an anti-terrorism conference he’d recently attended, Chuck Remsberg, Senior PoliceOne Contributor, had this to say:

“….according to two trainers at an anti-terrorism conference on the East Coast, preparations for attacks on American schools that will bring rivers of blood and staggering body counts are well under way in Islamic terrorist camps.

· The intended attackers have bluntly warned us they're going to do it.

· They're already begun testing school-related targets here.

· They've given us a catastrophic model to train against, which we've largely ignored and from which they have learned more deadly tactics.

We don't know for sure what they will do. No one knows the future. But by definition, a successful attack is one we are not ready for," declared one of the instructors, Lt. Col. Dave Grossman. Our schools fit that description to a "T"-as in Terrorism and Threat.

Grossman, the popular law enforcement motivational speaker, and Todd Rassa, a trainer with the SigArms Academy and an advisory board member for The Police Marksman magazine, shared a full day's agenda on the danger to U.S. schools.”

Should we be surprised? Not when Al-Qaeda has publicly asserted the "right" to kill 2,000,000 American children, Rassa explained, and has warned that "operations are in stages of preparation" now. Rassa played videotapes confiscated in Afghanistan, showing al-Qaeda terrorists practicing the takeover of a school. The trainees issue commands in English, rehearse separating youngsters into manageable groups and meeting any resistance with violence. Some "hostages" are taken to the rooftop, dangled over the edge, then "shot." (read more)

Some communities are making plans, and sharing them with others. John Clark and others in Oklahoma are conducting training sessions for EVERYBODY that might be involved in a terror attack, specifically involving children. They have a 'FREE Interactive Planning Tool” CD-Rom which has been released across the country to School Administrators and Law Enforcement Officers.'

It's not a matter of if, but when, terrorists will once again strike the United States, according to a retired lieutenant of the Oklahoma City Police Department who now leads awareness sessions on terrorism and response plans.

[John] Clark who developed the emergency response team for Oklahoma City police and responded to the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing in 1995, told participants his intent was not to make them paranoid but prepared. (snip)

"What's happening with our military on foreign countries will happen here. It's coming like a freight train. ... And one of the things they want is your children," he said. (read more) hat tip National Terror Alert

Chuck Remsberg asks "Why schools?"

Two reasons:

1. Our values. "The most sacred thing to us is our children, our babies," Rassa said. Killing hundreds of them at a time would significantly "boost Islamic morale and lower that of the enemy" (us). In Grossman's words, terrorists see this effort as "an attempt to defile our nation" by leaving it "stunned to its soul."

2. Our lack of preparation. Police agencies "aren't used to this," Rassa said. "We deal with acts of a criminal nature. This is an act of war," but because of our laws "we can't depend on the military to help us," at least at the outset. (read more)

Bottom line, terrorists would love to strike at our children, they have plans to carry out such attacks, they will use Beslan Russia as their guide -- are we prepared to prevent such an attack?

This is the novel on how the next terror attack will come nuclear plant imploded and oil reserves ignited

They might attack a soft target such as a stadium. Extremely large gas rc planes are now common and could be used a weapon. Motors such as leafblowers or chainsaws can be easily modified to swing up to a 28 inch prop. The modification parts are for sale on the net to do this with. The AMA or Academy of Model Aeronautics who provides insurance for over 2500 model clubs issued an alert telling members not to talk to the media about this. This warning is on the net still.

There has been at least one terrorist attack against a school before Beslan--one I know of was the Ma'alot schoolhouse massacre http://tinyurl.com/4sljz

Unfortunately, it is very difficult to prevent this sort of thing...one armed guard can not hold off several armed terrorists. I would imagine that the best preventative measures would be to infiltrate terrorist cells in advance of attacks...?
