"Evolution by stealth" written by Degrees of Madness
The conspiracy theorists may be right.OTTAWA - Canadian, U.S. and Mexican politicians discussed using "stealth" to overcome public resistance to the integration of the three countries at a confidential meeting last year, according to documents just released under U.S. Freedom of Information laws.Top military brass, corporate executives and diplomats also attended the meeting in Banff, Alta., where participants discussed everything from the harmonization of food and drug standards, to common immigration policies, and the pooling of energy resources.
The secret guest list of the North American Forum included then-U.S. secretary of defence Donald Rumsfeld, Canadian Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Rick Hillier, Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day, Pengrowth Corp. CEO James Kinnear and Lockheed Martin executive Ron Covais.
Presentation outlines for the forum acknowledge that the concept of North American integration - which some call a "North American Union" - is unpopular, and note that it might be tough to sell as a concept.
"While a vision is appealing, working on the infrastructure might yield more benefit and bring more people on board ('evolution by stealth')," the notes said.
There is nothing wrong with the U.S. working with Canada and Mexico in areas of common interest. But meeting in secret? That's a problem."Evolution by stealth" means using regulatory changes, such as food- and drug-safety benchmarks, which don't require parliamentary approval, to lay the infrastructure for North American integration. This allows for change with little or no public debate, critics say.Media were excluded from the September forum, and Day, who gave a speech at the event, declined to reveal the contents of his talk.
"It was meant as a private meeting," said Melisa Leclerc, a spokeswoman from Day's office, although she conceded he attended "in his capacity as minister for public security."

The partnership's stated goal is to protect North America from security threats such as terrorism and flu pandemics as well as economic threats from new global-market giants such as China.
I wonder if the U.S. brought up the fact that our security is threatened by illegals, including dangerous drug thugs and potential terrorists, pouring across our border from Mexico?

Just read that article you linked to. It's pretty sad, but not surprising. Of course the usual terrorists, ahem ...
Muslim groups came to the rescue, like CAIR, and American Muslim Alliance.
Can we have a group of our own? Maybe the AAI (Americans Against Islam), or Coalition Against Islamic Terror, CAIT? No we can't, because that would be RACIST, even though Islam isn't a race.

Debbie, if you are on the email list for American Family Association you probably have this link to One News Now.
http://www.onenewsnow.com/
They have a story on this also highlighting the "open borders" aspect.
Thanks for the link!

The whole Task Force for the Future of North America came up back in May 2005 and has been bandied about ever since. Clearly one of the holes in the premise (aside from all of the others) is the problem of illegal immigration.

Building a North American Community Report of the Independent Task Force on the Future of North America
...WHAT WE FACE Our countries face three common challenges: Shared security threats. Over the last decade, terrorist and criminal activity has underscored North America's vulnerability. All of the 9/11 terrorists succeeded in entering the United States directly from outside North America, but the 1999 arrest of a person trying to cross the Canadian-U.S. border as part of a plot to bomb the Los Angeles airport shows that terrorists may also try to gain access to the United States through Canada and Mexico. This person was found to have cased Canadian targets as well, and al-Qaeda has publicly listed Canada as one of its prime targets along with the United States...[more]
A year later, in May '06, I wrote: Open borders? My "eyes!" Referring to the comment made to an earlier post about the recommendations of the Task Force on the Future of North America: Building the Immigration "Wall" and Task Force on the Future of North America, with rampant drug smuggling and violence on the border with Mexico, I can see no way for a "borderless" border to ever occur. The U.S. must control the flow of people and illegal narcotics across its southern border. I see no alternative. Pat Buchanan has commented that he believes that there is a border war with Mexico on the horizon.
Its a bankrupt proposal that should be dead on arrival.

Julie, a/k/a mad_cow, no I am not familiar with that site and yes I am on the mailing list for American Family Association. Thanks for the tip. You had a great article, thanks for sharing it with my readers.
Good information, Stormwarning. We have all been hearing about this and I think it is a terrible idea.

I did a lengthy analysis and commentary actually on Motley Fool (Current Events) before I started my blog about 18 months ago. The link to it on my friend Moon's website is:
http://moonagewebdream.blogs.com/moonage_political_webream/2005/05/task_force_on_t.html
His political commentary is to my right, that's why I stick to issues relating to homeland security and counterterrorism.
PS: I think there is limited (and I mean limited) chance that this will happen.
