The Iraqi Red Crescent is expressing it's distaste with United States Democrats, telling them a pull-out of US and coalition troops is a bad idea and would lead to more bloodshed in Iraq. Over 40 members of The Red Crescent have been killed while working on humanitarian duties in Iraq. Fox News Channel reports, but are the Democrats listening?
Are they, the Democrats, thinking about what will happen if they try to pull the troops out or are they so narrow-minded in doing everything they can to oppose President George W. Bush, that they have lost site of the human lives at stake? Or is their commitment to spinach growers and peanut farmers more important that to national security and the safety of our troops?
"They chose to make a political statement," he [President George W. Bush] said. "That's their right but it is wrong for our troops and it's wrong for our country. To accept the bill proposed by the Democratic leadership would be to accept a policy that directly contradicts the judgment of our military commanders." (Fox)
What kind of message does this send to the terrorists? To Iran? To countries most of us have not even considered, like ... China? Russia?
We won the Cold War "without firing a shot," as Lady Thatcher put it, because the Soviet Union didn't want to risk a confrontation with our armed forces. Our military remains unparalleled. We have the only blue-water navy, the best-equipped, best-trained army and Marine Corps, and the world's most powerful air force. But unless we renew our financial support for the military, that supremacy in defense may soon be a thing of the past. [snip]Beijing last year announced its army will move "from regional defense to trans-regional mobility," including "long-distance maneuvers, rapid assaults and special operations." Its air force will expand "its capabilities in the areas of air strike, air and missile defense, early warning and reconnaissance, and strategic projection." (TownHall.com)
Do you remember these words by President Bush?
... how will we fight and win this war?We will direct every resource at our command — every means of diplomacy, every tool of intelligence, every instrument of law enforcement, every financial influence, and every necessary weapon of war — to the disruption and to the defeat of the global terror network.
[..] Our response involves far more than instant retaliation and isolated strikes. Americans should not expect one battle, but a lengthy campaign, unlike any other we have ever seen. It may include dramatic strikes, visible on TV, and covert operations, secret even in success. We will starve terrorists of funding, turn them one against another, drive them from place to place, until there is no refuge or no rest. And we will pursue nations that provide aid or safe haven to terrorism. Every nation, in every region, now has a decision to make. Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists. (Applause.) From this day forward, any nation that continues to harbor or support terrorism will be regarded by the United States as a hostile regime. (source)

In a classy move, the students at Baghdad University hang a banner in solidarity with Virginia Tech University students in wake of recent mass murder of 32 students and professors.

How many times I read people raising the spectre of past historic events or mistakes (certainly comparing Democrats or Republicans of 140 years ago to today can lead to fallacious conclusions).
"...people love to talk about the importance of history. No one wants to doom themselves...by repeating bad history; people cherry pick their favorite historical example to support their conclusions about present-day affairs. The danger of course is that if you are basing your conclusions on bad historical information, you’re not avoiding doom, you’re driving straight for it." I didn't write that, someone else did, but I think its quite appropriate here.
Having said that, Senator Harry Reid has his head up in a very dark and dingy place.

Let's see, I think the first major conflict and human rights issue the Democrats handled rather badly (that would be the American Civil War), so they've pretty well kept to their principles since. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it must be a Democrat.

Debbie that is the first piece of common sense I have heard to date coming out of Iraq.
The Dems said they could lead better, the Republicans said let them lead so the Americans could get a taste of just what they will do.
Is America getting the message? I sure hope so. Iraq is!
