The United States of America was called a 'haven for criminals' by a talk radio host in Jackson Tennessee. The term "sanctuary city" in the past was used by communities that gave shelter to victims of political violence, but today it is used to describe communities that shelter illegal aliens. These aliens are criminals, no matter how you look at it, they broke U.S. law to get inside America and they continue to break the law each day they stay here.
Robert L. Jamieson, Jr. is concerned about Seattle becoming a sanctuary city. I was amazed to read in his article, that while aliens are 'free and awaiting their day in immigration court' they have 'rights'. Lorie Dankers, a spokeswoman in the Department of Homeland Security said that 'people who are here illegally still have rights to privacy.'
It turns out a person waiting to appear before an immigration judge can apply for special work authorization. Who knew?... I'm wondering whether there is a better way for an enlightened nation to deal with people who keep on coming to this country for work.
I mean, if illegal immigrants are entitled to the right to privacy or can look for a job before they see the immigration judge, they deserve some protection in public, too.
Maybe an answer is the controversial concept taking center stage across the country -- sanctuary cities.
Mr. Jamieson references places where a type of sanctuary is already taking place, like Hightstown, N.J., near Princeton University, and New Haven, Conn. Read all the details at SeattlePI.com
Fox News' Bill O'Reilly called Virginia Beach a sanctuary city in his obnoxious rant with obnoxious Geraldo Rivera.
What precedent does this set for dealing with other criminals? Should we give them all pardons, jobs, rights to privacy, and no punishment? It seems that is exactly what many Americans want to do.

The quesiton of sanctuary cities, Debbie, has been around for a while. Seattle may be the most recent, but there was a big hubbub a few years back when New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg developed a new policy -- city agencies now won't inquire as to a person's immigration status except in the most extraordinary circumstances. The goal is for the city to have nothing to report.
If a city or municipality doesn't arrest an illegal alien when identified, it is a sanctuary city. Recently, there was another uproar when Austin Texas declared itself a sanctuary.
The issue however goes to who has the jurisdiction and the budget. That's why many cities don't do anything with an illegal unless they break a law other than the immigration laws.
