Pleasure hospital provides clitoral reconstruction UPDATED
Around the world young female children are forced to undergo an excruciatingly painful procedure through which the clitoris is excised without anesthesia using dirty knives or even sharp rocks. Now "a non-profit organization based in Las Vegas, is about to lay the cornerstone of a unique, pleasure-restoring hospital in Burkina Faso."
In the new facility, hundreds - and eventually thousands - of women will have operations to repair the sexual organ mutilated against their will in childhood. An estimated 135 million women worldwide are victims of this detestable tradition. Until now, with the damage done, little could be done to help them achieve the sexual pleasure known to the rest of humanity.
The "pleasure hospital" campaign began after French surgeon Dr. Pierre Foldes announced he had developed a technique that restores sexual sensibility to women who have suffered removal of the clitoris.
The story of Clitoraid and the "Adopt a Clitoris" program Rael, spiritual leader of the Raelian Movement, heard of Dr. Foldes' work and had the idea of helping as many victims as possible through the creation
Rael often says that to save women is to save humanity, since femininity represents its future. With Rael's encouragement and the help of others, Clitoraid was formed, and its "Adopt a Clitoris" program was
designed not to help just a few women, but to finance the construction of a unique, sanitary and specialized medical unit in which women of all nationalities and religions could have their clitoral sensation "rebuilt."
The resulting hospital, the culmination of intensive fundraising efforts by Raelians and others, will be located in Matourkou, in the southern suburb of Bobo Dioulasso, the second city of Burkina Faso,
alongside Bobo - Banfora Road. After first buying the land and shipping construction materials from Canada and Europe, Clitoraid benefactors are confident they will be able to gather the final $40,000 needed to finish
the building.
Willing candidates await treatment from volunteer doctors Afflicted women have reacted with enthusiasm to news of the new hospital. More than 100 candidates are ready to have the surgery as soon as
everything is ready, according to Banemanie, director of the association Voie Feminine de l'Epanouissement (A.V.F.E.), Clitoraid's Burkina Faso representative. (more)
Someone remind me which religions practice this barbaric mutilation???
UPDATE: Religion
FGM predates Islam and is not practised by the majority of Muslims, but has acquired a religious dimension. Where it is practised by Muslims, religion is frequently cited as a reason. Many of those who oppose mutilation deny that there is any link between the practise and religion, but Islamic leaders are not unanimous on the subject. The Qur'an does not contain any call for FGM, but a few hadith (sayings attributed to the Prophet Muhammad) refer to it. In one case, in answer to a question put to him by 'Um 'Attiyah (a practitioner of FGM), the Prophet is quoted as saying ''reduce but do not destroy''.Mutilation has persisted among some converts to Christianity. Christian missionaries have tried to discourage the practice, but found it to be too deep rooted. In some cases, in order to keep converts, they have ignored and even condoned the practice.
FGM was practised by the Falasha (Ethiopian Jews), but it is not known if the practise has persisted following their emigration to Israel. The remainder of the FGM-practising community follow traditional Animist religions. (source) (Hat tip Stormwarning)

Thanks Debbie.
One of things that I found facinating was that the American Medical community in 1915 accepted such mutilation as a "behavioral modification."
Also, while I have no proof of this, I do seriously doubt if the Falasha (the "Lost Tribe") would still practice such butchery in Israel.
However, I am glad that you brought it out that its not a Muslim specific issue. It is also a "common" practice among the Massai tribe in Africa.
One of the other things, slightly off topic, is the still continuing problem of China's practice of female "baby sacrifice."

hold on a second.. the Raelian Movement?!
Do you guys know who they are?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ra%C3%ABlism
From Wikipedia:
[quote]
Raëlism is a naturalist[1] UFO religion promoted by the Raëlian Movement, which was founded by former auto racing journalist Claude Vorhilon. Followers, the Raëlians, believe in the rights of individualism, sexual self-determination, distributive economy, and accountability, claiming that this will be fostered by greater intelligences and will bring a new age of wealth and peace, as predicted by the main religions.[2]
In December 26, 2002, Brigitte Boisselier, a Raëlian Bishop and CEO of a biotechnology company called Clonaid, announced the birth of baby Eve, a human clone, which at that point ignited much media attention, ethical debate, doubt, critics, and claims of a hoax. Spokespeople for the movement, such as Claude Vorhilon, have suggested that this is only first step in achieving a more important agenda, saying that that accelerated growth process and mind transfer, in combination with cloning are mechanisms by which eternal life may be achieved. Raëlians believe that cloning will serve as the basis for a resurrection of the dead from previous human generations into an intelligently governed paradise which they believe will be created on Earth after the technological singularity[3][4] and the coming of Elohim as well as the prophets of the main religions.
[..]
According to the History of Raëlism, an explanation of humanity's origins and future was transmitted to Raël by a 25,000-year-old extraterrestrial named Yahweh Elohim, who came in a classic UFO-type space vessel and landed in a volcano in Auvergne, France called Puy de Lassolas. These messages were later published by Raël in the book The Message Given to me by Extra-terrestrials (now republished as Intelligent Design: Message from the Designers 2006 ISBN 2940252203).
Raëlians believe that the name Elohim, as said by primitive people of the past, refers to "those who came from the sky", or more accurately, humanoid extraterrestrials. Raëlism espouses belief that through mastery of solar astronomy, terraformation, nanotechnology, and genetic engineering, the Elohim were able to synthesize a novel ecological system with organisms adapted to the chemical and thermal make up of the Earth.
The message dictated to Raël during his encounter with the Elohim states that the Elohim contacted about forty people to act as their prophets on Earth, including Moses, Elijah, Ezekiel, Mahavira, Buddha, John the Baptist, Jesus, Muhammad, Joseph Smith, and Bahá'u'lláh.[5] Raëlians believe that the following religions are Elohimic in orgin: Hinduism - Judaism - Jainism - Buddhism - Taoism - Christianity - Islam - Mormonism - Bahá'í Faith.[5]
Artist's rendering of the Embassy for Extraterrestrials or "Third Temple" which Raëlians believe will support an official contact with Extraterrestrial Elohim and their messengers of the main religions at the "New Jerusalem"
Artist's rendering of the Embassy for Extraterrestrials or "Third Temple"[6][7][8] which Raëlians believe will support an official contact with Extraterrestrial Elohim and their messengers of the main religions at the "New Jerusalem"[9][6]
The Raëlians believe, furthermore, that the Elohim will visit the earth officially when enough of its population is peaceful and come to know about them. They believe this is foretold in all religious texts - the predicted Age of Apocalypse or Revelation (unveiling of the truth). They say these humans from another world will appear to drop down from the sky and meet in the embassy they have asked Raël to build for them and share their advanced scientific knowledge with us, their creation. Thus, one of their stated main goals is to inform as many people as possible about this extraterrestrial race.

Female Genital Mutilation isn't just for Muslims (even though it is prevalent in Muslim countries)...it never was...but it is an abomination nonetheless.

Rastaman, I knew what you meant.
Thanks for the comments Angel, Layla and everyone. I just happened to run across this and thought it was amazing news.
This butchering is actually done by the older women, so we can't just blame the men.
And yes it is mostly African tribal rituals, but not limited to that by any means.
Posted by: Debbie | May 16, 2007 at 12:35 PM
Oh, and no, Debbie, I wasn't accusing you of sexist rants, that was inspired by the previous comment that "all the men are clearly rapists".
I just can't get into Political Correctness. I try so hard, too.....

Before we get off on a sexist rant against all men, let's try to remember that this abomination is a RELIGIOUS practice. Christians don't do it, Buddhists don't do it, Hindus and Sikhs don't do it.
I'm not certain that it's just muslims who do this crime, it may be a tribal practice among some African tribes. I recall reading something about that, a long time back. It is a gross violation of a persons body and dignity, which puts it on a par with many other disgusting practices of muslims.
If we want this to stop we have to kill the religion. The men are just as much forced into it from birth as the women are.
In the meantime, I gotta comment, if anyone could come up with a way to restore womens pleasure, it would have to be the French! LOL! But good for them. Every once in awhile they do a good thing. Last one was inventing the Aqualung. I don't recall anything before that.
