Fred Thompson, what's NOT to like?
Fred Thompson was the must see TV last night, not the latest Republican candidates debating. Even using the word debate is a joke. Too many candidates, lousy moderators and even worse questions. Fox News Channel set the bar so high with their debate, it makes these others look very sad and unprofessional. Raise your hand if .... you're supporting Fred Thompson!
A.C. at Fore-Left has a nice article on the latest Republican Presidential debate and compares that with the Sean Hannity interview with Fred Thompson last night. A.C. concludes:
One of the things that draws me to Fred is his basic horse sense and the no nonsense manner in which he speaks of America at a crossroads. It definitely is. He's not very telegenic and he's not particularly slick in speech--I don't even care much for his acting abilities--but he's saying the things the others aren't but should be.In some ways he comes across as the wise uncle or grandfather among a bunch of children, perhaps oversimplified but perhaps who we need now. If he runs.
I agree completely. Rastaman wonders if "saying the right things" is all that Thompson is doing. I don't think that's the case. Thompson is not a career politician and he is running because he truly believes things need changing.
Thompson understands who the enemy is, he's not afraid to name them. He understands that welfare and entitlement programs are bringing this country down. He understands that an attack on Iran, or some other country, could be necessary and he's willing to do it. He is not for amnesty for illegal aliens.
Fred Thompson. More Than Just A Homely, Bulldog Face?He said Washington’s partisan politics had bred cynicism about government and there was a “disconnect” between Washington politicians and Americans.”
What? A politician who steps on the Big Lie that most Americans favor amnesty for 12 million MORE illegals? Someone who dares to speak of the vast gap that’s arisen between Them and Us? (Islamanazi)
Fred Thompson says he would pardon Scooter Libby, but I cannot find any comments from him on Border Patrol Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean!!! My hope would be that Fred would pardon them as well.
One thing is for sure, Fred Thompson would not let this happen:
“A plot by pro-American dissidents to overthrow one of the last Asian communist dictatorships has been thwarted by a US undercover agent who posed as an arms dealer. (read the details)
Do not miss J.B. Williams article at CFP:
I've pointed out for some time now that no man (or woman) in their right mind would ever seek national public office today. Only self-absorbed career thieves determined to cash-in on the get-rich-quick scheme of modern politics would endure the hate-mongering cesspool of American politics. Anyone not looking to cash-in, can easily live without the stench of modern politics.I pointed out early on, that the first sign that Fred Thompson might be the right man at the right time was the fact that only Fred Thompson was smart enough not to want the most thankless job in the world, or want to endure the most scum-filled election process in order to win it.
The second sign that he might be the right guy with the right stuff is the undeniable fact that he scares the Lenin right out of modern secular globalists on both sides of today's political aisle. (read it all)
Yep, Fred Thompson is running for President and now it's time for everyone to start attacking him. That's OK, he can take the heat.

Jim Robinson, thanks for the information. I'm sure once he officially gets in the race, everything will come out into the open. What he is saying now sounds good. As I've said before, it's early. If you find out any more information, let us know. I'm always open.

During his eight years in the Senate, Thompson won his free trade credentials with his votes to extend the president's fast-track trade promotion authority and to approve permanent trading relations with China. One right-wing critic in a widely circulated internet column called Thompson a "neocon globalist" for his immigration, free trade, and foreign policy positions.
Social conservatives are also likely to question Thompson's "liberal" voting record on immigration. Although Thompson has recently written and spoken out about the need for strong border control, while in the Senate he voted to increase visas for skilled foreign workers and to increase permits for unskilled foreign farm workers. Overall, Americans for Better Immigration, an anti-immigration lobbying group, gives Thompson a career grade of C for his mixed voting record. Thompson will likely come under withering criticism from anti-immigrant candidate Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO), who mixes his social conservatism with a heavy dose of nationalism and anti-corporate populism.

If Fred is nominated, I'll eagerly vote for him. That said, he's not my rock-star right now. In fact, I'm worried he might have some skeletons (that's just me though, it's not based on a single darn thing - just my gut, which is naturally fallible). Part of that is that there is still more to learn about him, as well as the other candidates (and potential candidates). Gov. Huckabee I like and appreciate in terms of his fair tax plan, but he's way too weak and the name sounds...Mark Twainish. Romney and Thompson I like more. And oh that Giuliani were pro-life and pro-gun. Gingrich is a big flirt; he says he might run in September, then says the odds are 4-1 against. If he does, I'm probably likely to be playing his records at this point.

I don't think Powell has any ambitions to be president. He's had enough of politics.
I noticed that Fred Thompson did a little dancing when it came to abortion. But he did finally say it should go back to the States to decide. That's the way it should be.
Yep, time will tell.
Thanks for the comments everybody. Busy day here, so posting was very light. I'll get busy tomorrow.

I like him, but I'm afraid he still can't stand up to the Dems...I'm afraid of his age and his health, plus today there is an article in Newsweek about him being known to be lazy all the way back to high school.
I sure wish Powell would run...a good black against a great black...what a race!

"One of the things that draws me to Fred is his basic horse sense and the no nonsense manner in which he speaks of America at a crossroads. It definitely is. He's not very telegenic and he's not particularly slick in speech"
O my God, isn't that exactly what people were saying about Bush in 1999?

I'm taking a wait and see as well. Straight talk is definitely a plus. I'm beginning to think of the Presidency as a partnership between P and VP, rather than having someone who is supposed to be capable of taking over as P just standing in the wings. My husband thinks that egos are too big a problem, but I'd like to consider F.Thompson as the face and voice of the presidency, and Giuliani as the XO or get it done guy.
I don't have a problem with the pro-choice issue as long as the P is in favor of returning it to the states' legislatures instead of having the matter decided by the courts. It's about time that judges went back to following the law instead of interpreting it to suit their personal ideals. I think this is Giuliani's position, but he doesn't seem able to make it a clear statement.

I'm keepin my fingers crossed that he may be the One!

I sure hope you're right. I'm undecided and taking a wait-and-see attitude. I do wish he'd speak up for the two incarcerated Border Guards but that may be a politically stupid move right now too. I'm not a political animal and don't get into the deep stuff there.
The thing about his TV interview last night that struck me more than any other is he used the words "Islamic terrorism" and identified Islam as the enemy, something Bush did once and then backed off from. He also tends to say "homosexual" instead of "gay" and "illegal alien" instead of "illegal immigrant". Those are pretty good signs that he says what he thinks.
The obverse is past remarks about legalizing the illegals. He may also be pro-choice, which I'm for, but he's kind of talking around that one. I think ... maybe... that he's a realist in Right Wing clothing and in that case Debbie would be right, he would be the person we need for the job.
Time will tell.
