Immigration, from the beginning to the present

We can't really understand how awful the present situation is with illegal immigration unless we take a look back to the beginning. The Vanishing American did just that. Starting with the Naturalization Act of 1795, he pulled out old documents, encyclopedias, ... with shocking facts and figures.

[snip] . This current floodtide of immigration means that in one year -- ONE year, we receive more immigrants from Mexico alone than we received from that country in the period between 1820 and 1952.

Please think about that, and take it in. [snip]

How symbolic: the era of screening immigrants was about to end in a little over a decade, anyway, when the Hart-Celler Act of 1965 would transform America irrevocably.

At the time, of course, the proponents of the bill, including Edward and Robert Kennedy, insisted that the bill would not change the character of our country or alter the demographic balance, but they were either lying or foolish, because reality has shown that the critics of the bill were spot-on; their fears were justified.

One critic, Myra C. Hacker is quoted as saying

Whatever may be our benevolent intent toward many people, [the bill] fails to give due consideration to the economic needs, the cultural traditions, and the public sentiment of the citizens of the United States." (U.S. Senate, Subcommittee on Immigration and Naturalization of the Committee on the Judiciary, Washington, D.C., Feb. 10, 1965. pp. 681-687.)

Sounds familiar, doesn't it? Our present-day Senate is even more oblivious to the interests, needs, traditions, and sentiments of the citizens than were the Senators who passed that fateful 1965 bill. (read it all, you really should)

Reports are that Republicans will suffer for aligning themselves with Sen. Edward Kennedy and his immigration bill. I thought this bill was dead, but reliable sources say it could be b-a-c-k this next week.

The amnesty bill Senate bill S. 1348 failed to get the needed Cloture votes on Friday. But as they say it isn’t over till it is over. Bush will be attending a luncheon with Senate Republicans on Tuesday, hoping to outmaneuver conservative Republicans. The important thing is that we keep pushing out this info, for folks to be able to clearly understand the severity of the situation. If any form of the amensty bill goes through.

Kennedy alliance costly to GOP senators, By Ralph Z. Hallow, THE WASHINGTON TIMES, June 8, 2007 (hat tip Mary Chamberlain)

An immigration alliance with Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts is damaging Arizona Sen. John McCain and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham among conservative Republicans.

The damage to the two Republican senators caused by their support for Mr. Kennedy's immigration bill -- which was blocked by a Senate filibuster last night -- is especially clear in Mr. Graham's home state, scene of an early presidential primary next year.

"I'm very wary of a Republican who is talking to Ted Kennedy," Rick Beltram, Republican Party chairman for Spartanburg County, S.C., told The Washington Times yesterday, after it was reported that Mr. Graham and Mr. McCain had first checked with Mr. Kennedy before deciding to vote with the Massachusetts Democrat on an amendment to the Senate bill.

The problem of illegal aliens in Nevada is largely centered on the casinos in Las Vegas and Reno, although it impacts other areas. I know personally through my DS that attempts to avoid hiring illegal aliens have been thwarted by the "authorities" who have the templates against which to compare ID and worker papers for forgeries, but have not been willing to share them with businesses. So that is a reverse example. Here, atleast in one case, you've got a hotel wanting to ensure that they don't hire illegals, and don't get to the coop that they need from the gov't.

McCain and Graham not the only casualties of S.1348

Harry Reid's approval rating is now 19% (Rasmussen Poll)

I have just located a number of groups in Nevada who don't illegal immigrants as a "Gift from God".

NEVADA ACTION COALITION website has an interesting article on how LULAC, MALDEF, LARAZA got started and who funded the startup.

I'll give you a clue. IF YOU HAVE A FORD, SELL IT AND DON'T BUY ANOTHER FORD.

Thanks again for the nod Debbie.

It is of the utmost importance that American citizens become informed. Knowledge is power.
Angel has put it so well.
"Whats happening now is invasion NOT immigration!"

Exactly!!

We're going to have to gear up again and get back in the middle of this. The president has mistaken Americans' will on this one.

I fear, though, that the senate is setting political theatre to pass a bill and lay it at the president's feet when all heck breaks loose.

We're better served to influence whatever comes out of the senate, than sit this one out.

Hi Debbie,

Well forget Teddy Kennedy, he is not the only one who wanted this bill passed, so did our President Phony.

I call it AmNasty not amnesty.

whats happening now is invasion NOT immigration!
