It's a good new - bad news day
Everywhere I look these days, it's good news - bad news. In Baquba, "for the first time since the assault began, Iraqi soldiers joined the operation in significant numbers." That's the good news. The bad news is "many of the Sunni residents had little trust for the Shiite-dominated army." (NYT)
Many residents say they feel as if they have been caught between fighters from Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia, Shiite militias and an Iraqi security force that they believe looks at them as little more than insurgents’ allies.
More good news in Iraq:
"Tens of thousands of US and Iraqi soldiers are pushing on with simultaneous operations in Baghdad and to the north, south and west of the capital under Operation Phantom Thunder, a new plan aimed at rooting out Al Qaida fighters and other militants."
The bad news, this is "where 12 US troops have died in the past two days." (Gulf News)
Good news, six Guantanamo Bay prisoners have been sent back to their home countries. The bad news is the White House may be considering closing Guantanamo Bay, which means those remaining prisoners who could not be sent back to their own country, would be brought into the United States. If that happens, you know the ACLU et al would be clamoring to give them all the rights of American citizens.
Good news for Fatah, the West is acknowledging them as the true government of the Palestinian people and will be flooding them with money and supplies. The bad news is that the Palestinians don't want Fatah, they want Hamas. LA Times via The Front-Line
Good news in Switzerland, "a North African man and his wife went on trial Wednesday on charges they ran Web sites that supported al-Qaida-linked groups with videos of people killed by terrorists and information on how to make bombs." Go read all the evil they produced here. The bad news: If they are actually found guilty, they won't get the death penalty.
In China the good news is: " Thirteen job agencies at the main railway station of a major Chinese city have been closed for tricking people into working as slaves." The bad news is this is going on all over China and this is just a drop in the bucket for media coverage, hoping it will improve China's image in the world in preparation for the 2008 Olympics. (The TIMES)
Good news in the U.S. "the U.S. Senate approved a bill enabling the government to sue international oil and gas cartels in a move clearly directed against OPEC." The bad news, "the bill is unlikely to receive presidential backing." (RIA)
Good news in Israel: " Israel fired missiles and sent tanks on a foray into Gaza on Wednesday, killing four Palestinians." The bad news ... pfffft. I can't think of a darn thing bad about this.
Remember Alan Johnston. Read Bernie of Planck's Constant has a nice article on Alan Johnston and on the boycott Israel crowd. Go read his list of Israeli achievements, things those who want to boycott Israel would have to give up for a true boycott.

(Bill) That's great news. This film needs to be seen. Thanks for letting me know.
(Freedom Now) You make a great point. A lice comb, I like that.

You forgot to mention that Frank Gaffney's film that was banned by PBS has been picked up by Fox. Now that's good news!

If you could point out one time in history that the good news/bad news dynamic didnt factor in, I will give you my life savings...

Since this is a lot of money we will have to scrutinize your findings with a fine tooth comb (a lice comb will do).
Even the WWII victories came at a price, Soviet expansion...
