Long-term planning
Contrary to popular belief, many Palestinians wish for the days when Israel was in charge. They long for the days when things were more peaceful than they are today. Some in Gaza stated that they approved when Israel started launching missiles and attacks, ... because the thugs on the streets went into hiding. (via Fox News Channel) Shouldn't this tell us all something? When Hamas and Fatah were brought into power, no one had any idea what the future would look like. No long-term planning took place then, and no long-term planning is taking place now.
In the short-term, all sides are re-arming and preparing for a confrontation that could start as early as July. Syria, Hamas, Hezbollah, are all acquiring weapons. Many of those weapons are coming from Russia, bought and paid for by Iran, who in turn gets some missiles of their own.
Russia and Iran are conducting proxy wars against the United States and Israel by funding, equipping and by providing strategy to terrorists who ultimately fight in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Israel. Russia is complicit in the proxy wars because Iran is by far and away one of the largest arms customers of Russia, which booked an estimated $18 billion dollars in arms contracts in 2005, Iran accounting for $4 billion of that amount, Syria another $2 billion, and Sudan $400 million, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin. In 2006, Russia actually exported $8 billion in weapons worldwide, much of it going to Iran, Syria, and Venezuela.Russian technology and weapons expertise is now showing itself in the bodies of American troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, and in Israeli citizens from terrorist attacks by Hezbollah and Hamas. (WDC Media)
The Near East Consulting web site reports, via Primer Connecticut:
44 percent of Palestinian Arabs prefer a return to the pre-Oslo situation. In other words, after nearly a decade and a half of vicious anti-Israel propaganda by the Palestinian Authority, nearly half the population of the disputed territories would prefer Israeli rule!Asked about the main issue that made them depressed, only 2 percent cited the so-called Israeli occupation. Economic hardship, the absence of security, the power struggle between Hamas and Fatah, being ruled by Hamas and family problems were all greater concerns.
Terrorists Pledge to Get American Weapons, Yid With Lid, Israelated, all via WND
... the proposal is to arm Fatah in its civil war against Hamas. The only problem is that the Fatah "army" has been "merged" with Hamas since the Mecca agreement. The Gathering Storm on Iran and her proxies:
History shows that appeasing tyranny has never, ever, succeeded - especially when tyranny’s plans are made obvious by tyranny itself. But when we do respond to the threat - sooner or later - the price will be steep and long lasting and would most probably result in a constitutional crisis in the this country. [snip]Either we get off the Middle-East oil tit or our country will be held hostage by Islamic tyranny. Plain and simple. This is no longer an economic debate but a question of national survival. Let’s make it so.
How much long-term planning is the United States doing in connection to the Middle East? I hope something is going on behind the scenes, because up front ... it looks like we are making this up as we go along. This reminded me of a married couple who called Neil Cavuto on Fox. The wife is in her 80's, the husband is 90. They are building a new house from the ground up, but wanted to know about some "long-term" investments. They were planning to do something big on the husband's 100th birthday. I call that long-term planning. We need some of that spirit.
If you believe in Biblical prophecy, WDC Media Media offers this:
The Russian-Iranian relationship sets a historic precedent since Russia and Iran have never allied since the establishment of Israel as a nation in 1948. The Biblical prophecy in Ezekiel 38:4,5 speaks of Gog, modern day Russia, coming against Israel, “I will turn you around, put hooks into your jaws, and lead you out, with all your army…Persia, Ethiopia and Libya are with them.” Russia has armed Sudan, Egypt and Libya, which accounts for all of northern Africa at the time of the prophecy. Now Iran and Russia are together. Watch for what is next. (WDC Media)
This could be a very nasty Summer.

Dear Layla and Debbie,
Well I just think that it is taking a big risk to just delegitimize Israel, I have a feeling that Israel will be the ones who end up saving our bacon in this War on Terrorism because we are fighting this war on terrorism with kid gloves because of all this political correctness, the idea that our troops have to call in and get permission to fire back at the enemy.
That is plain hog wash, we never fought a war like that back in WWII.

I have read many articles about Arabs/Muslims living in Israel, and appreciating their environment, and proclaiming that life in Israel, even for a Muslim, is better than life in a Muslim Nation.

I know the US is selling weapons to folks that should not get them, and shame on us for that. If they are old weapons, that's good, but I'm not so sure.
Melanie Phillips is great. Phil, you must be confusing her with someone else.
Thanks for the comments everybody.

Melanie Philips is far from a nutcase Phil. I am confused as to why you would refer to her as such.
Posted by: Layla | June 08, 2007 at 04:05 PM
BillT,
So that just means to me that I should just delegitimize Melanie Phillips as the nutcase that she is.

You should read the Melanie Phillips piece from today about the boycott of Israel. She makes the case that the boycott isn't so much in support of the Palestinians as it is an attempt to delegitimize Israel.

Rastaman is right in one area but wrong in another, we sell and so does Russia but neither the U.S. or Russia sell them the Top Of The Line of High Tech weapon systems that would be suicide and Russia knows it as well.
Think about it Rastaman you turn around and give your worst enemy your own secret tips so that they have an edge over you. No way, no one is that Dumb.
What the U.S. and Russia sells is old outdated junk.
It may seem high tech to those backward countries but by no means is that high tech to U.S. or Russia.

The US is unfortunately also complicit in the proxy war against Israel since we've been selling our high-tech weaponry to Saudi Arabia, Egypt and other Mid-East nations. We give the Egyptian military over 2 billion $$ every year as well, and have put Israel at very serious risk by doing so.
Playing both ends against the middle always backfires and it's going to again. I agree that possibly as soon as July, the muslims will attack Israel again, and I think all Hell will break loose.
Stock up your pantry.
