It's a sad day when the United Nations is more patriotic and American than some Americans are. Yep, "The
U.N. Security Council agreed Wednesday to an Iraqi request to extend the mandate of the U.S.-led multinational force after the country's foreign minister said the troops were "vitally necessary." (big hat tip to Trinity)

Compare that with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who expressed their opinions in a letter, in advance of their meeting with President George W. Bush, saying the Iraq troop surge policy was a failure. Reid and Pelosi are also working on new legislation "to limit the U.S. mission in Iraq, begin a phased redeployment of U.S. troops, and "bring the war to a responsible end."
The council also strongly condemned the bombing of Samarra's revered Shiite shrine and urged all countries, especially those in the region, to support Iraq in its pursuit of peace.Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari told the council members that despite the senseless violence "the government has made tremendous strides toward the day when security will be provided by a self-sufficient, Iraqi national security force."
"While Iraqis will always be grateful for their liberation from an absolute despot, no Iraqi government official — indeed, no Iraqi citizen — wants the presence of foreign troops on Iraqi soil one day longer than is vitally necessary," he said.
"But today, and for the foreseeable months at least, the presence of (multinational) troops is vitally necessary not only for Iraq but also to safeguard regional security and stability," Zebari said. (AP)
Reid and Pelosi, in the letter:
"As many had foreseen, the escalation has failed to produce the intended results," the two leaders wrote. "The increase in US forces has had little impact in curbing the violence or fostering political reconciliation." They go on to further say that the troop escalation "has not enhanced" America's national security. (source)
The United Nations is considering the possible deployment of a multinational force in Gaza.
The Tension reminds us that Reid's poll numbers are even lower than Bush.
Big Dog's Weblog, "What is it with these idiots anyway? Most Americans want out but want us to win and yet the donks insist on a course of action that will render us a loss."
Conservative Dialysis, "In their quest to humiliate the armed forces of the U.S. before the entire planet, Democrats Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi sent a letter to the President telling him that are going to once again attempt to take over his responsibilities as Commander-in-Chief:"
Lori Byrd, Wizbang, "I thought the final "surge" troops were not even to be in place until this month..."
Democrats are heavily invested in failure in Iraq. The President will be judged by what he did and tried to do in Iraq. That judgment might not come for many years and even if it is ultimately deemed a failure there is no doubt (except among the most rabid wackos) that he did what he thought was good for the country. There is also no doubt that the President wanted to win in Iraq. I don't think the same can be said for most of the Democrats in Congress.

Trinity, I think you are right. I had high hopes for the new Secretary General. He seems to be a great improvement over Kofi. That's not saying much.
We can always hope, but I think the UN has too many problems to ever be really useful. However, Ban Ki-moon is investigating all the corruption and pedophilia. That would be a full time job. ha
Thanks again Trinity.
Thanks Christie.

Great comparison Deb. The irony just floored me when I read it and I knew you would do it justice. Well done. Reid and Pelosi continue to prove that the Dems are not just out of touch with the American mind set, but also seemingly the UN, not that is strange, isn't it? I believe the change in leadership of the UN has something to do with that..what do you all believe?
