Controlling illegal aliens is now up to the States and local communities

I believe that the future of illegal immigration now stands directly with the States and local communities. We can't depend on Washington, it's up to us, the People. Individual communities need to start cracking down on the illegal aliens in their own realm of control. If each community would do this, the clamp down would spread across the nation until control of one community would spill over to the jurisdiction of the next community. Local police, sheriffs, courts, could set and execute control over the aliens in their area. What a concept!

In Georgia:

The Georgia Security and Immigration Compliance Act that so many of us worked so hard to get passed last year will begin to go into effect on July 1st...which means, among other things, that as employers, the state of Georgia and all local governments - including counties and cities - must begin to use the free federal Employment Eligibility Verification program ( EEV - also known as the Basic Pilot Program) to verify the eligibility of newly hired employees, using immigration status and other information.

Basic Pilot may not be used to verify the status of employees hired before enrollment in the program.

Local governments not using the available federal tool on Monday morning will be in violation of the new state law authored by state Senator Chip Rogers.

Also, the state of Georgia and all local governments are required to use the available federal tool, the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program to verify the eligibility of all applicants for public benefits if they are using federal funding...think Community Development Block Grants.

We hope that you will all call your city and county governments and ask if they are ready to comply with these parts of SB 529. Doing so is very important! (via reader Mary Chamberlain)

Immigration History Lesson and Where to Go from Here:

The fact of the matter is, this is our country and we have a right to say who gets to come here and under what circumstances they get to do so. Americans, who overwhelmingly do not support this bill, want other measures taken before we deal with those who are here ILLEGALLY. We want a moratorium placed on immigration so that we can get a handle on the people who are here. We want tough penalties and fines for employers who have ILLEGALS on their payrolls and we want the border secure. By cracking down on employers the market for jobs will dry up and ILLEGALS will go elsewhere as evidenced by the crackdown in Panama City Florida. The sheriff has been showing up at construction sites with 5 or 6 cars and watching for people to run. They then pick them up for trespassing or speeding (as they ran through someone’s property or sped off) and report them to Immigration. The result is that ILLEGALS are leaving because employers are not hiring them. This can work across the country if we just enforce the law.

Once we have a cooling period where we have secured the border (with a fence or a wall as San Diego did), once we have weeded out the ILLEGALS from the job market by cracking down on employers and once we have a handle on what we have in this country (which should reduce through attrition as ILLEGALS find it more difficult to get work) then we can get to work on a truly comprehensive bill that would allow seasonal and guest workers to do some of the work we do not have enough people to accomplish. During that down time we can also clear the nearly 4 million person backlog of those waiting to get here legally. (more at Big Dog's Weblog)

"The official roll breaks down the vote alphabetically, by state, and of course by vote. What it doesn’t do is tell you the order they voted in, which is critical to understanding (or at least inferring) motive. They’re supposed to vote in alphabetical order, but if they’re not present when the roll is called — or if they are present but would rather keep mum to see how things are shaking out — they get skipped, and can then approach the podium afterwards, when they see fit, to cast their ballot.

Note that fully six of them switched — and only five switches total were needed to kill the bill. The other fencesitters must have noticed, sensed the momentum, and recalibrated their own votes accordingly. The other notable is the Burr-Harkin-Pryor-Nelson run. They all voted no, all in succession, and were all switchers, which makes we wonder if they had an informal agreement among themselves.

The dotted line marks the 40th no vote, which doomed the bill. Everyone after that knew it was dead (assuming they’d been keeping count), which makes the late switchers like Coleman, McConnell, and especially Voinovich switchers of convenience, not conviction. Why vote yes on a bill that you know is going to lose?

Isn't that what Republicans wanted? Smaller federal government. BE careful what you wish for. No one in the federal government really wants to deal with this issue. It's all about acting like they are doing something about it. There are laws already on the books that are sufficient, but they just aren't enforced. The Democrats don't want to touch this issue because they are afraid of offending someone, and the Republicans don't want to change anything because they want cheap labor.

I have said many time that the roll of the Federal Gubment should be two things and two things only:

1. Print money.

2. Defend the shores.

They obviously have failed miserably on the later.

Other laws and decisions should be the responsibility of state and local gubments.

Immigration reform and enforement on local levels I fear will not work unless ALL areas choose to enforce the law. Failure of uniformity will eventually result in the migration of criminal invaders to "sanctuary areas" that choose not to enforce the law.

Immigration enforcement should still be a federal assignment and I think it is the job of the American people to force the federal gubment to do its job.

Steve, I know. But we can't really expect any mass deportations to be seriously considered in Washington. It's a pipe dream. However, deporting one at a time via local communities is a possibility. We will have to wait and watch.

That is what it will take to help solve our immigration crisis. I could never fathom what Bush is thinking in this regard.
