I respect the jury’s verdict. But I have concluded that the prison sentence given to Mr. Libby is excessive. Therefore, I am commuting the portion of Mr. Libby’s sentence that required him to spend thirty months in prison. -- President George W. Bush, July 2, 2007 (NRO)
President George W. Bush has made the correct decision for Lewis Scooter Libby, but what will he do about the border guards Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, who have been in prison for simply doing their jobs?
Border Patrol Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean were guarding the Mexican border near El Paso, Texas, on Feb. 17, 2005, when they intercepted a van carrying 743 pounds of marijuana. For what happened next, they were convicted and sentenced under a statute that was designed to impose heavy punishment on criminal drug smugglers caught in the commission of a crime. (source)
Ramos and Compean are serving 11-year and 12-year prison terms, respectively, for:
... the crime of putting one bullet in the buttocks of the admitted drug smuggler, Osvaldo Aldrete-Davila, and failing to report the discharge of their firearms. The nonfatal bullet didn't stop the smuggler from running to escape in a van waiting for him on the Mexican side of the border.
Now it's time for President Bush to step up and free these men. Fred Thompson agrees with the commutation of Libby's sentence AND agrees with me that the border guards should be freed.

Bush would say he didn't actually Pardon Libby, so it's not a one for one comparison. But certainly you could make the case their sentences were equally harsh and could be commuted.
But Debbie, we both know what it's all about regards the border. Hopefully Bush will pardon them on the way out, if they're still alive.
