Macon Georgia's Muslim Mayor and Hugo Chavez

The Mayor of Macon, Georgia, Jack Ellis, a/k/a Hakeem Mansour Ellis, sent a letter of support to Hugo Chavez. I'm not getting too excited about this, just another mixed up American. We've seen several of them out in Hollywood, rushing to Hugo Chavez to show their appreciation for his comments referring to President George W. Bush as "the devil." They all deserve each other. Ellis converted from Christianity to Islam last year, I suppose he's getting publicity-hungry and this little stunt has him back in the news again.
Of course Chavez is using this as another sound bite on his government run media in Venezuela. The Venezuelans can't say much about it, but residents of Georgia are angry:
Former mayoral candidate David Corr said the mayor's comments were "an outrage.""We should condemn Chavez as an enemy of liberty," Corr said. "In fact, we should also condemn Ellis as an enemy of liberty."
State Rep. Allen Peake, R-Macon, said the mayor's action "taints" the town.
"I think it's a negative for us," he told The Macon Telegraph. "We need to be doing things in this community that show the tremendous positives of Macon."
Ellis praised the controversial leader, who has subsidized the cost of heating fuel for some American low-income citizens, as a champion for the common man who could offer aid to Macon's residents. (Fox)
I'm confident the citizens of Macon Georgia do not want any help from Hugo Chavez. From RedState
The ordinance will simply prohibit tax payer funds from being used to fund or reimburse any travel or expenses related to travel or business conducted in any country that is listed as a state sponsor of terrorism by the Secretary of State or certified as not fully complying with American counter-terrorism efforts.I also have a few questions for Mayor Jack Ellis, who prefers now to be called Hakeem Mansour Ellis.
Other Georgians not happy:
People should boycott businesses in Macon and Bibb County until that happens, he said, calling the mayor's action "treasonous.""It's unbelievable that he would do what he's done," said Johnson, who added he spent most of his career working as a civilian for the U.S. Marine Corps. "That is so wrong." (Macon.com)
Other bloggers commiserating with the fine folks in Georgia:
Ellis, oil and unconnected dots, Lucid Idiocy

Hi, Ben: I would like to respectfully disagree with you regarding Chavez's accomplishments. True, he was democratically elected. But it has been offered that his second election was a farce, trumped up with ballots for Chavez cast by phantom voters and other vessels of corruption. I spent 4 years in Venezuela: the literacy rate is not 100% (respectfully, nothing is 100%) but much less, with remote areas without schools altogether. He has since rewrote the constitution to allow himself to remain president (read "dictator") far into the future. He also has nationalized many companies, which is, if I understand, a Facist method of government. I know this because the company I worked for in Venezuelan is now in Government hands, along with other companies associated with my old company. He recently took private land to "feed the people". Like there is no other farm land in Venezuela. Heck, there are tens of thousands of acres of farmable government land in Venezuela 9i've seen it)without having to rob private corporations of their land. Respectfully submitted, though, and I respect you for your opinion, even though I disagree!

"Never advocate a system to which you would not subject yourself."
interesting. chavez has been democratically elected, twice. chavez gave venezuela its constitutional democracy and improved the literacy rate in his country to 100% while distributing copies of hte constitution to every person in the country. he held a referendum to try and negate the rule HE wrote stating that nobody could be elected more than twice, so that he could run a third time. he lost the referendum and accepted the result.
the 2002 coup attempt against chavez, which was backed by the united states, failed. simply because he is popular in venezuela. maybe it has something to do with the improved standard of living.

SFC MAC, glad to share the news and linky-love. The term useful idiots fits perfectly. I like your rule, too bad these loonies don't follow it.
Come visit again, the door's always open. Nice to meet new friends.

Right Truth,
Thanks for the backtrack! On Ellis:
It's bad enough when bonehead leftist private citizens pull this crap. It's worse when its instigated by an elected public official. Entities like the San Fransisco City Council, for instance, churn out anti-American "resolutions"as a matter of public policy. Whenever this happens, it only serves to lend support to avowed enemies of the U.S., who use these 'useful idiots' as part of their media jihad. Rule of thumb: Never advocate a system to which you would not subject yourself.
