Deedee Miller: No, I understand what Bollinger was doing. But, you know, he could have been a complete Lefty and praised Ahmadinejad for coming, and sucked up to him. That's what I really expected.

Deedee Miller

Bollinger did not mean what he said. He probably changed his introduction few hours prior to the conference under pressure. You need to realized that over 5,000.00 students were protesting. Bollinger is the head of one of the most leftist university in the US. He was really too easy on Ahmadinejad. He did not even pressure him enough to answer a yes or no question. DONT'T BE FOULED, IT WAS A BIG FREAK SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Debbie

PAUL: That was a strange statement from Ahmadinejad about homosexuals. The strange thing is that in Iran sex change surgeries are considered OK. Think about that logic for a few minutes.

FAULTLINEUSA: Thanks. I agree.

Faultline USA

That was an excellent summary and I totally agree that the invitation should never have been granted by Columbia. No matter what Lee Bollinger said, it can't erase what he did.

Paul Champagne

Against my better judgement, I listened to his speech yesterday (curiosity killed the cat after all), and came away dazed and confused. I think I must have lost about 50 IQ points trying to comprehend his circular thinking.

As for there not being any homosexuals in Iran ... well not anymore, not after all the executions.

Debbie

SUEK: Good question about Ahmadinejad's fluency in English. I don't know and have not read anything about it. I would love to know the answer.

Who provided the translator also. Was it his own translator who he brought with him? Or was it a translator supplied by the University? By the US?

DD2: I agree, he should not have been invited in the first place.

suek

Agreed on the propaganda bit. And also that he should never have been invited. Leeway granted if it was leverage to gain the release of the Columbia alumni who was prisoner in Iran, though.

Has anyone run across information about Amadinajad's ability to understand English? The use of a translator is a great gimmick - either way. If he understands English, it gives him time to compose an answer. If he doesn't, then who knows _what_ the translator is saying _to_ him or to _us_. It would be interesting to find out if someone who speaks farsi has had the opportunity to translate for people who matter...

DD2DD2

Yes Deb, it was a BIG PROPOGANDA SHOW.
And thats exactly why he should have never been invited.
