For Fred Thompson, It's Showtime That's right, Fred's first debate is tonight and he MUST shine. He needs to toss off that old grandfatherly, slow-as-molasses routine and be sharp. He needs to SHINE.
From IMAO, Daily Fred Thompson Fact:
Debate organizers decided there has to be at least a week between debates involving Fred Thompson to allow sufficient time to clean the blood off the walls.
Let's hope that's the case. From Fred '08:
Yesterday the campaign announced that Senator Howard Baker will serve as our Honorary National Chairman. Sen. Baker has enjoyed a remarkable career in public service and has been Fred's political mentor. Sen. Spencer Abraham, Sen. George Allen, and Elizabeth Cheney will serve as campaign co-chairs. All have outstanding substantive and political experience and will have visible roles in our campaign. We are very pleased to have them on board.Fred is in Michigan for his first debate this afternoon. Watch the debate--not what the pundits say. Fred will look Presidential and be substantive. He will make the case that he is prepared to be President. He will also make the case that he is an authentic conservative with small-town values.
The focus of tonight's debate will be economics. Look for Fred to reaffirm his support for lower taxes, cutting waste, and reforming government. When in the Senate, he supported several bills to provide tax relief to the American people including President Bush's tax cuts. As chair of the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs, Fred created the two volume report "Government at the Brink" in June, 2001, identifying ways to eliminate fraud and waste to make our federal government more efficient, saving taxpayers billions.
The debate will air at 4 PM EST today on CNBC, and will then be rebroadcast at 9 PM EST on MSNBC. Be sure to tell your friends to tune in and watch. Thank you for your continued support.
During the two-hour Michigan debate, Thompson will be positioned between top GOP rivals Giuliani and Mitt Romney. The debate is sponsored by The Wall Street Journal, CNBC and MSNBC and will focus on economic issues.
I can't think of a better position for Fred to be placed. Shine Fred, shine. From Fort Hart Knox:
... Word has it he has been preparing for weeks to make a good showing.
My guess is that Fred Thompson will do a good job in the debate tomorrow night, but I doubt very seriously if he will make big news or hit the ball out of the park at his first GOP debate with other Republican candidates.Sister Tolodjah:
... at this stage in the game I don’t see him as presidential material, and I say that as someone who hasn’t warmed up to Romney or Rudy, either, although Romney initially sounded appealing.
... He needs to KNOCK THE COVER OFF THE BALL. He needs to beat the rest of the field BY TEN TOUCHDOWNS.

BEN: You express my sentiments exactly. I think Fred is the man, I have heard him speak, I have read his writings, and he believes as you have stated.
He needs to SAY it out loud, with a plan, and I think he could really have a chance.

I don't need a flashy & dynamic candidate, what I require is genuine substance. I need to hear Sen. Thompson name Islam as the cause of Islamic terrorism, without adjectives. I need to hear him specify the Islamic doctrines that promote violence; I need to hear him denounce them. I need to hear an outline of his plan to rid the world of Islam.
I need to hear him denounce the current administration's open borders idiocy. I need to hear his proposals for securing our borders.
I need to hear him denounce Hillary's Health care proposal and categorically reject the concept of socialized medicine.

I think that Thompson came across to be kind of disinterested, and bored. He has to smile more and make a better impression

The Thompson campaign continued to play down expectations for his debate performance when they issued a Press Release saying only that he needed to get through the debate "gaffe free". The statement probably would have had more credibility if they could have gotten through the release gaffe free...They referenced Thompson Campaign spokesman Todd Rich when in fact his name is Todd Harris. That is a rookie mistake and indicative of a lack luster campaign.
To his credit, Thompson had an adequate performance and is a serious candidate. However, as I have stated...he needed to knock the cover off the ball and clearly he did not.

I'm sorry to say, Ames Tiedeman, you are right. It was pretty boring. I had hopes Fred would have some great lines tonight, some real plans for what he would do as President, but nope.
