Vitter Amendment to keep federal funds from sanctuary cities - tabled
The DREAM Act is back, and "will be offered as an amendment to the Labor, Health and Human Services Appropriations bill (H.R. 3043) ". Also a movement to stop funding to sanctuary cities was tabled. Start making your phone calls:
Tonight, senators voted by a 52-42 margin to table or kill an amendment (SA 3277) sponsored by Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) to the commerce, justice, and science (CJS) spending bill (H.R. 3093), which would have prevented Federal Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grants from being awarded to states and municipalities with sanctuary policies in place. If the Vitter amendment had been adopted, most cities would have stopped providing sanctuary to illegal aliens in order to retain COPS funding. For now, cities can continue to break federal law without consequence. They can order their police not to report illegal aliens, even though federal law say such orders are illegal. The Clinton and Bush Justice Departments have refused to enforce the law. And tonight, 52 Senators decided against threatening the loss of federal funds if those cities don't end their sanctuary policies.
The vote was disappointing because I really believe that if we had another couple of days of activism that enough more of you would have made the phone calls to change the six Senators necessary for us to have won.
Earlier:
Today, during Senate consideration of the commerce, justice, and science (CJS) spending bill (H.R. 3093), senators are expected to take up one of two amendments sponsored by Sen. David Vitter (R-La.), which would prevent Federal Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grants from being awarded to states and municipalities with sanctuary policies in place. If one of the Vitter amendments is adopted, it is unlikely that any city would forgo this Federal funding in order to continue to provide sanctuary to illegal aliens.Call your senator today to ask him/her to support the Vitter anti-sanctuary amendments to the CJS spending bill: 202-224-3121.
ACT NOW TO STOP THE DREAM ACT! Please call your Senators IMMEDIATELY and let them know that you oppose the DREAM Act.

I don't know how we can defeat this forever. We have to keep plugging away every time we are challenged.

This is sickening. The only way to get action is for voters to contact their elected officials. When the Senate was considering the last amnesty debacle, the switchboard had to shut down due to the excess traffic on the lines. That got those wavering about their vote's attention. It's truly the only way.
Loud and proud.

"How can we kill this thing once and for all?"
About the same way we can kill off stupid gun-control bills from popping up. I wish I knew...
