Party On Americans!

I can't keep up with the news on terrorism today. It's like rapid fire, one incident after another ... one warning after another. Bomb scare at an airport, warning that malls may be targeted, and "WMD,Soft Targets, Hip-Hop, Cocaine, and Hezbollah."

The only conclusion I can come to is ... It must be the Holiday Season. Each year around major holidays in the United States, the threats from Islamic terrorists increase. It's the old, "we'll get you at the Mall as you shop", or "at the airport when you travel", any soft target and we will get you. I say to you terrorists your threats don't terrorize us.

Americans are going to shop, travel, congregate, worship, pray, eat, party, dress in fancy Western clothes, work, spend money, save money, conduct commerce, and we will not give you more than a passing thought. So there! Sure, here at Right Truth we report the latest terror news, but I certainly don't dwell on it. I don't change my plans because of it. That would be giving in to the terrorists, and we won't do that.

On November 11, Veterans Day, Americans will honor our military. But for you terrorists, please note that Americans celebrate their brave soldiers EVERY single day of the year. We fly the American Flag proudly at our house 365 days a year, every year. It's our little way of saying "Thank you" to those who protect our freedoms and it's also our little way of spitting in the terrorists eye. We win, you lose.

Next Americans will celebrate Thanksgiving by giving thanks to God for his blessings, watching football,
drinking a beer or a nice glass of wine, eating way too much food including turkey (or perhaps a big, fat HAM, after a breakfast including sausage and bacon), and we won't give you terrorists a second thought. Then comes Christmas for Christians, other holidays for members of other faiths, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings. You, terrorists, will have no part in in destroying the joy of these occasions. We Are Americans.

What DO Americans worry about? We worry about some members of our own government and the Liberal media, that's what. Americans like me don't think that many members of Congress truly understand the threat that Western nations are under from Islamic terrorists. They do not understand the true desire of the terrorists for our country. Flatly, we think they are more concerned about politics, getting re-elected, than they are about the wants of the American people.

Sorry, but I've got another comment on the concept of "WINNING."

For better or for worse (mostly worse) Musharraf became our ally in the War on Terrorism. And just like Pakistan gave rise to the Taliban, yes, HISTORY DOES REPEAT ITSELF.

A recent Washington Times column by Diane West (coincidentally titled, "Pakistan on the Brink" http://washingtontimes.com/article/20071109/EDITORIAL04/111090004/1013/EDITORIAL revealed that "Pakistanis listed defeating al Qaeda, the Taliban and other Jihadi groups” dead last in their list of priorities."

Again, I ask the very straightforward and very real question: "HOW DO WE WIN THIS WAR?"

One last point (I think), Ortho, is that ever since the attacks of Sept 11th, its been difficult to separate the Internet warriors' saber rattling from any real insight to defining the conflict and understanding "the way ahead." The fact is that "winning" is a balance between actually battle, denial of funding and, for lack of a better word, "diplomacy." Of course that last point will raise hackles. But watch how Pakistan and Turkey begin to play roles in the unfolding of the GWOT.

Alas Ortho, it was the hope that query about the definition of winning and the explanation of how this would be achieved might be provided by "MR. CAPS." However, yours is a great jumping off point (and possibly a course of discussion for my place when I have the chance).

However, I believe that The first step in that discussion is recognizing what bin Laden's objectives were that morning of Sept. 11th.

Stormwarning requested, "IN ALL SERIOUSNESS," a "DEFINITION OF 'WINNING,'" in I think, the planetary "War on Terror." There is a beautiful definition of "winning" in Chapter 3, "Strengthen Alliances to Defeat Global Terrorism and Work to Prevent Attacks Against Us and Our Friends," Section C, "The Way Ahead," in the 2006 National Security Strategy of the United States of America. The NSS states, "In the long run, winning the war on terror means winning the battle of ideas, for it is ideas that can turn the disenchanted into murderers willing to kill innocent victims." So the definition of "winning the war on terror" is "winning the battle of ideas." Clearly, winning is winning.

Also of interest are the next few sentences in the NSS. These sentences seem to contradict PALADIN's suggestion that "WE [the "West"?] ARE AT WAR WITH THIS SO CALLED RELIGION [Islam?]." The NSS states, "While the War on Terror is a battle of ideas, it is not a battle of religions. The transnational terrorists confronting us today exploit the proud religion of Islam to serve a violent political vision: the establishment, by terrorism and subversion, of a totalitarian empire that denies all political and religious freedom." In the words of the NSS, the enemies are not believers of a "religion" but believers of an "idea" of "a totalitarian empire." The NSS casts the enemy as a violent "political" enemy not a violent "religious" enemy.

First and foremost, September 11th was about symbolism (that is a widely held belief)...yeah, economic impact was part of it, but the whole thing was about symbolism. That's why the Pentagon was hit and why the White House/Capitol Building was another target.

So the terrorists are threatening to blow up shopping centers during the holiday season? That is precisely why terrorists will never win; they think like children. Shopping Centers and World Trade Centers are “toys.” Like Leggos and Lincoln Logs, we build them up and tear them down all the time. Bin Laden thought he could destroy America by taking down the WTC.
