The Volunteer, a book review by Right Truth Book Club

The Volunteer, by Michael Ross with Jonathan Kay is "the incredible true story of an Israeli spy on the trail of international terrorists. From the first sentence to the last, this book is a MUST READ!!! Ross shares his personal and professional life, beginning as a 21 year old fresh out of the army in Victoria, British Columbia. How does a Mossad career begin this way? It was destiny.
Ross is open about the inner workings of the Mossad and other Israeli security and defense organizations. He is also open in talking about undercover operations he was involved in, including names, dates, places. One instance which stuck me as very important to share is the Al-Yarmouk.
The first shipment of Scud-Cs was scheduled to leave North Korea in January 1991 aboard a Syrian-Jordanian co-owned ship called the Al-Yarmouk. Our intelligence indicated it was carrying at least twenty four Scud-Cs in kit form, including twenty Scud launchers. From North Korea, the ship was to chart a circuitous path to the Syrian port of Lattakia on the Mediterranean, via the Capt of Good Hope, thus bypassing the Suez Canal.
The Scuds would be used against Israel, if the ship was allowed to reach it's destination. It did, and they were, ... mainly because the Israelis did not want to take one innocent life.
The crew of the ship -- impoverished third world men trying to make a buck or two to send home, [snip] ... And Shamir himself had canceled less important missions in the past on the grounds that there was even a slight chance innocent bystanders might be killed.
I started dog-earing pages of importance when reading The Volunteer. That didn't work, because I caught myself dog-earing almost every page. Underlining didn't work either, because almost every sentence was the victim of my pen. Some books on terrorism can be dry and textbook-like. Not The Volunteer. You MUST READ this book if you are concerned about Islamic terrorism; the military; inter-agency and international information sharing; and world politics.
Michael Ross shares my frustrations at the FBI and other agencies, when he shares this:
[snip] During the meetings, our FBI partners stunned us by stating that any and all intelligence gathered by "Brazil-Nut" at the Mosque would be deemed inadmissible as evidence, as it was obtained while in a place of worship. The ISA handlers had a very hard time understanding and accepting this point as they knew that the Mosque was almost exclusively the only place where Islamists talked openly about their activities.
After September 11, 2001, Michael Ross said, "People everywhere now know that they are in a high-stakes war that pits civilization against a fascistic death cult." We are all in this together. Reading The Volunteer makes this point even more clear. The Volunteer is well written, easy to read, 292 pages packed FULL of valuable information and one man's personal experience with radical Islamic terrorism.
I suggest you purchase this book, you won't be sorry.
