Many who are opposed to illegal aliens crossing the Southern border have pushed for a fence. But what about the landowners along the border? How does this affect their property, their means to making a living, access to water for crops of livestock? Do these people have any say in what happens on their property?
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff sent the letter to property owners who either refused or ignored requests to let federal land surveyors on their property. The letter says the government will first try to negotiate with landowners for the purchase of property it needs for construction of the fence. But it also warns that if no deal is reached, the government may go to court to "seek title and possession, and the court will determine fair market value." (ChronWatch)
Some protesters say the fence will destroy their property, others are worried about nature, natural habitats, etc. The legitimate concerns of landowners must betaken into consideration.
Petition Congress to Reinstate $3 Billion in Border Fence Funds, from Numbers USA:
Read it and sign it at: www.ReformUS.orgWithout explanation, Congress has stripped away $3 billion in desperately needed funds to build the Border Fence that it approved last year and to provide for other border security.
That's right—without telling the public, Congress is pulling the plug on the U.S.-Mexico Border Fence that it voted for with such enthusiasm last year (just before they asked voters to re-elect them).
Help us turn this petition into a national overnight phenomenon. Time is critical—Congress will finalize this funding question before Christmas!
Will you take a minute to sign it right now? Go to www.ReformUS.org.
IF CONGRESS DOES NOT RESTORE THE FUNDING . . .
. . . THERE WILL BE NO BORDER FENCE!

Boy! Talk about comparing apples and oranges! Some people will slop anything out there to try and further their liberal agendas.

Hi Debbie. Great post, and of course I signed the petition.
I'd just gotten through putting up a post on immigration and the Pew poll so I see we're in the same ballpark today.
I wonder if we'll ever see any substantive reversal of the damage that the unfettered invasion of mostly Mexicans has done to my formerly fair country. Between the gang crime and the individual monsters, the wage decreases and the job losses, the habitat destruction and the overcrowding, the court and deportation and border expenses and on and on and on, it's going to be horribly expensive to reverse Bush's Brave New North America.

To Faultline: I am immently aware of the border issues as I live a whole lot closer to the border than you. I am also quite familiar with the Congressional delegation's point of view (including those not currently in office) about the border wall. Since I'm involved in the "field" I am also well aware of the merits of the "Wall."
While I, myself, have been in favor of the "Wall" long before becoming a Texan, the local opposition to the Wall is intriguing to say the least. Further, I agree with you about the role of Eminent Domain in National Security. However, having written that, the "Wall" will not be foolproof, it will just be better.

The sentiments of the ranchers in south Texas are a mixed bag. Some don’t want the fence because for centuries they’ve been using Mexican labor to run the ranches. Others want the fence because they are under siege from Mexican gangs etc. The argument of eminent domain is interesting - especially now. Nobody is crying foul about the millions or Texas acres that will be taken to build the NAFTA highway (aka: the Trans Texas Corridor). Nobody cried foul when big business came in to Arlington, Texas to take blocks and blocks of lower and middle income homes from families just to build the new Cowboy stadium. Eminent Domain has it place and protecting our nation’s security IS that place!!!

OK. Phil first. Convenient excuse for "some?" If you check the positions of the border Congressmen on the wall, you may be surprised...and its on both sides of the aisle.
Angel: no wall is impenetrable...never will be. But a well constructed barrier, supplemented by the [bold]RIGHT[/bold] technology could have a noticeable impact.

Hi Debbie,
Well I agree with Always, plus I think it's what I call a convenient excuse for the elected officials that some don't want the fence.

Good! I hope these brave, patriotic Americans continue to fight against a land-hungry federal government. Many Americans see "the wall" for what it is: a tax-money sinkhole, welfare to government contractors, and an ineffective act in the "war" against Mexican migrants.

The S. Texas politicians don't want the wall. The S. Texas farmers and ranchers don't want the wall.
The wall will help stem the flow of illegals.

IMO, Congress never intended to fund the border fence.
I fail to understand why our elected representatives don't understand the magnitude of the problem with illegal invaders!
