It's official, Fred Thompson is out of the race. What will Conservatives do? They will probably turn to Romney because the gag reflex is LESS with Romney than it is with Huckabee, McCain, Paul, or Giuliani. I would not say this ends the Republican party. There are rumors he would be interested in the Vice President position but running with which candidate?
Fred 'out with a whimper'.
Statement from Sen. Fred ThompsonMcLean, VA - Senator Fred Thompson today issued the following statement about his campaign for President:
“Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people.”
Thanks, Fred.
While some say Fred will go down as a personal hero, the country has not benefited from his 'effort'. The benefit would be if he had stayed in the race and WON. Well, maybe there was some benefit:
Thompson's brief foray into the field may have had some effect, however, possibly draining votes away from former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, with whom he shared a base of Southern social conservatives. (Politico)
Fred Thompson has not and will not be endorsing any of the other candidates. Thompson supporter Al D’Amato goes to McCain. At least one campaign worker has gone over to Romney, and Michelle Malkin wonders where the rest will go.
Ok, so 'He’s still with his ailing mother. “He’s just being a good son.”
To Republican National Committee Chairman Robert M. “Mike” Duncan, YES Fred was actually running for President and his name is FRED, not FRANK. duh
Final thought: You can partially blame the media, including Fox News, for Fred's demise. They never gave him a chance, leaving him out, claiming he would never make it, he didn't have a chance. Maybe he didn't, but they could have given the guy a fair shake. Read at "Scuttlebutt About The Media" The HILL Chronicles.

F@#$, I voted him at the Heritage poll.

I have voted in every presidential election since 1972. Looks like 2008 might be the first time I sit one out.

This is a huge loss. As you say, at least there is Romney. We need to throw our support behind what we've got left.
Some (leftist) news sources are predicting that it will be down to Clinton vs. McCain. What a choice. I really hope it's not true.
The Economist is predicting Clinton in the White House because the Conservatives can't put their united support behind any of our candidates.
It looks like just about every news provider has signed on as fifth column support for the left...surprise, surprise.
Time to put in our strongest support behind our candidate and show some enthusiasm.

Fred's demise can't be blamed entirely on the media. He entered the presidential race late and for a while, at least, didn't seem to take it seriously. Plus, his (social) conservatism was questionable, considering that he didn't catch on with the base. Still, I don't think we've seen the last of Fred. If he doesn't end up as the VP candidate he'll be in the public eye in some other capacity. So don't feel too bad, Debbie.

Thanks for the mention Debbie, but no, I did not get the link...sigh
Don't mourn Fred's departure-he is not gone - we all know he will be picked up as a vp running mate.
