Fox News is reporting that Pakistan's President Musharraf will not allow American troops to hunt down al-Qaeda in Pakistan and if they try it they will be considered 'invaders.' What else could Musharraf say? He can't admit to his citizens, the Taliban or al-Qaeda, that he is approving of US troops entering the tribal areas. This must be done under the radar. Thanks to the media, who announced last week that the US would be sending Americans into the region to track down al-Qaeda terrorists. Thank you media.
Musharraf said the US would REGRET any INVASION of Pakistan.
He also said he would resign if opposition parties tried to impeach him after next month's elections.Musharraf's remarks in an interview with Singapore's The Straits Times ...
The New York Times reported last week that Washington was considering expanding the authority of the CIA and the U.S. military to launch aggressive covert operations within the tribal regions. Several U.S. presidential candidates have also hinted they would support unilateral action in the area.
Musharraf told The Straits Times U.S. troops would "certainly" be considered invaders if they set foot in the tribal regions.
"If they come without our permission, that's against the sovereignty of Pakistan. I challenge anybody coming into our mountains. They would regret that day," he said in the interview. (continue reading)
And then there's this from The Moderate Voice:
The US threat is a matter of serious concern not only for Pakistan but for the entire international community. President Musharraf should realise now that it is better to make amends with one’s own rivals/enemies within the country than regret friendship with someone far away in a different country who sooner than later could turn into a bully.
Captain's Quarters says:
What would we gain in this overt invasion? If we succeeded, we would destabilize Musharraf and give credibility to the radical Islamists, who would probably overthrown the military and political leadership in Pakistan and seize control of the nuclear weapons. If we failed, we would probably strengthen Musharraf's dictatorship and keep Pakistan in the grip of an autocracy (at best) for another decade, with all of the attendant radicalization it would produce.
The rugged area has long been considered a likely hiding place for al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and his top deputy Ayman al-Zawahri, as well as an operating ground for Taliban militants planning attacks on coalition forces in Afghanistan. With all that money we have sent to Pakistan, we should have a little say in how it's used. If we want troops in there, then it must be done covertly. We will be sending a minimum of 3,000 more Marines to Afghanistan in the near future. I'm wondering if they just might accidentally cross the border???
Yesterday in Lahore, a suicide bomber killed 22 people, increasing concerns about the fate of national elections due on February 18.
Radioactive material was found in Kyrgyzstan, destination Iran:
On January 9, Kyrgyz officials announced that they had taken possession of a small load of radioactive substance discovered aboard a train bound for Iran. The material has been placed in a special area in Kyrgyzstan, but questions are being raised about the nature and quantity of the substance, who was behind its transport, and how the train carrying it crossed three border checkpoints before being detected.Kyrgyz officials are looking for answers, but their behavior has raised questions, too. Why, for example, did it take them nine days to announce the discovery of the material, which was found on December 31 when radiation detectors alerted Uzbek border guards? They promptly sent the train back to Kyrgyzstan.
The Kyrgyz National Security Service continues to decline comment on that and other questions, and Almabek Aitikeev, a departmental head in the Kyrgyz Emergency Situations Ministry, offered only generalities about the quantity of the material when asked by RFE/RL’s Kyrgyz Service. A new nuclear deadline has been set for North Korea.
North Korea needs to complete the disabling of its nuclear facilities by the end of next month, US nuclear envoy Christopher Hill has said.Speaking in South Korea, Mr Hill said he wanted the process finished by the time the South's incoming President Lee Myung-bak takes office on 25 February. The NY Times seems to love reporting stuff that would be better not to talk about, but they do have the right. Of more concern to me is the loose lips of those who get this sort of info to the Times.
That Musharraf has to go into denial mode over this is a given.
North Korea (Kim Jong Il) is doing what he's always done over the years, playing the same old game of delays and pretended confusion and failure to comply. The purpose is to keep doing what he wants while still getting shipments of free food and fuel. In the end, he'll still get all his nuclear material sold to whoever's buying and we will have once again declared the whole thing a failed effort.
It's interesting that the Chinese failed to take the massive spread of orbiting debris into account, since they use that same space for their own satellites.
On that same note, remember all the fear over nuclear EMP bursts in space that could take out our satellites? It would take out everyone elses, too. Not much of a threat anymore.
This techno warfare crap is getting on my nerves. Everyone is groping for the ultimate weapon and one of them might just find it.

Musharraf is barely hanging on to power. He is no friend of ours, just a petty dictator.

SO MUSHARAF HAS FINALLY SHOWN HIS HAND. WHEN THE U.S. DOES SEND PEOPLE IN THERE IT WILL BE ON GOOD SOLID INTEL I HOPE. I DON,T SUSPECT THERE WILL BE AN INVASION OF THE TRIBAL REGIONS (THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE IN 02) BUT THERE WILL BE A LOT OF SMALL TEAM ACTION BY SPEC WAR AND CIA PEOPLE. IF WE,RE GONNA KILL BIN LADEN THIS IS THE BEST WAY TO DO IT. HOPEFULLY THESE GUYS CAN PASS THEMSELVES OFF AS PAKIS , AS THIS WOULD BE THE BEST WAY TO INFILTRATE THIS AREA. OH AND WE MUST NOT FORGET THAT WEASEL ADAM GADAHN TOO. ONE SMALL TEAM WITH GOOD COMM ,FIGHTER BOMBERS ON CALL 24/ 7 , AND REALLY GOOD INTEL CAN ACCOMPLISH MORE THAN AN ENTIRE BRIGADE OF MARINES IN A MONTH. WE ONLY HAVE TO LOOK BACK TO THE FALL OF KABUL IN 01. THERE WERE 30 SPECIAL FORCES AND S.A.S. MEMBERS ON THE GROUND WHEN IT FELL.
