South Carolina, Illegal Immigration, and Huckabee

House speaker unveils plan to curb illegal immigration in SC (hat tip Mary Chamberlain and Alipac)

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. --House Republican leaders unveiled an immigration reform plan Monday that would bill the federal government for the cost of detaining illegal immigrants and prevent illegals from attending any public college.

"I've heard a loud message from South Carolinians all over the state and they are overwhelmingly saying we need to do something," said House Speaker Bobby Harrell, who estimated 75,000 illegal immigrants in the state.

However, the number of illegal immigrants is difficult to determine.

The latest Census estimate puts South Carolina's Hispanic and Latino population at roughly 130,000. Advocates say it's probably more than three times that number.

Changes to the state's immigration laws have failed to pass the Legislature in recent years.

"We believe the time is now - that the public has made it very clear they want this dealt with," said Harrell, R-Charleston.

Under the plan, the state would seek an agreement with the federal government to enforce immigration laws and be reimbursed for training officers and detaining illegals. The proposal would also restrict state money for communities declaring themselves sanctuary cities, which aid illegal immigrants without reporting them to the authorities.

There are currently no sanctuary cities in South Carolina.

I keep pointing out Huckabee reminds me of Bill Clinton and now we can add lying to the list...

From The Washington Times:

Mike Huckabee yesterday contradicted his own top immigration surrogate, announcing he will not support a constitutional amendment to end birthright citizenship for children born in the United States to illegal aliens.

Hi Debbie! This is another shameful sham of an attempt to stifle really doing something worthwhile regarding illegal immigration. I am so sick of this issue just being talked about and nothing being really done.

Where are the guards and fence Bush promised? Ugh!

At this point I hold no faith in any candidate-including Rudy--they might as well all be blowing hot air.

I know you like Thompson--I saw his wife Geri or Jeri whichever, anyhow on Fox today and yesterday on Cnn. She is a pistol and I think she is hurting his chances. (Sorry for the off topic)

Hats off to SC! Wish we had some stones in the Colorado State House and Senate like those being demonstrated in SC. If the rule of law means things, then let's start enforcing the laws of ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, and all the crimes they commit as such.

The link below is to the website I wandered into in 2007 where I found Mike Huckaby's comments as Governor of Arkansas in 2006 as a new Mexican Consulate opened in Little Rock. Then Governor Huckaby thought it would be "GOOD FOR BUSINESS".
Where do the legal citizens of Arkansas or, for that matter, every state in America fit into the HUCKABY PLAN?????????????
My family spent Thanksgiving in Arkansas - as we drove through Rogers, home of Tyson Foods(Mr. Huckaby's good friend and big contributor is Mr. Tyson) this nice little town is now home to fast food and grocery stores with latino names the founders of this town could not pronounce. THIS IS THE CHANGING FACE OF AMERICA, IF WE DON'T DO SOMETHING NOW!

"THere's no way he'll win...I heard it on the news"...and there you have it; how the mainstream media are manipulating who has a chance of winning and who is going to get our votes. I really think that Fred Thompson is our only chance. All the others are abominable.

Fred Thompson got into the race to make sure issues important to the Reagan coalition of fiscal, defense and social conservatives get addressed so that the coalition could move forward and defeat any BillaryCare Democrat opponent in 2008.

Now the only thing that Fred can do is to allow, or not allow, the ONLY candidate who can keep the coalition together to be defeated in Michigan.

Without the support of the back-bone conservatives who are known as Fred-Heads, the Reagan Coalition will surely be run over by the McAmnesty express.

Do all the Reagan coalition partners forget what Ronald Reagan said? He told us that if we all did not stand together, we would be torn apart.

Governor Mitt Romney is the ONLY candidate at this point who can stop the McCainites, who will end up destroying this country through lax immigration enforcement. Rampant illegal immigration will destroy this country as we know it today in probably less than twenty years.

Don't let the history books show that Fred was just a spoiler for the Reagan coalition, indirectly causing it's ending it forever.

I was working at the hospital tonight when a young nurse told me she was going to vote for Huckabee.

I asked her WHY she was voting for Huckabee.

"Because he's a nice man and seems like a decent guy."

Sigh! I went down the usual list of what is required to qualify as a conservative, pointing out the many many areas where Mike Huckabee falls short.

"Well, who are you going to vote for?" she asked.

"Fred Thompson."

"Oh there's no way he will win."

"How do you know that?"

"I heard it on the news."

Sigh! Thanks a lot Fox News. Young people can be so frustrating. They want to do the right thing, but they are so easily duped into believing almost anything.

But I betcha the politicians have already figured that out.

I'll keep working on her.

I'm so confused about the candidates!

I guess they only come out one way in Hope, Arkansas, He's a smooth talker, that's for sure. I don't trust him at all. I think he's a snake.
