After blowing a whistle and firing flares and getting no response a security team aboard a vessel contracted by the US Navy fired live machine gun rounds in the direction of two Iranian fast boats that were approaching. The Westward Venture was about 50 miles off the coast of Iran in the Persian Gulf when the two fast boats appeared.
After the fast boats failed to heed the whistle and flares the Navy security team used M16 rifles and .50-caliber machine guns to fire off the warnings. The Westward Venture has been contracted by the Navy to carry military cargo to Kuwait. (more)

Ortho,
Your analysis has been insightful. One of the things I found interesting about this report was the statement that the guard behaves in an "unprofessional" and "aggressive" manner. The first is amusing to me because it sounds as if the Defense Department wishes to train the Iranians on "professionalism," the second because this Iranian aggression is taking place in Iran's neighborhood, far away from the United States, and is provoking an attack by the United States. I suppose if it weren't for the "aggression" of so many "unprofessional" Middle Eastern countries, the United States would not have to be aggressively patrolling the Middle East.
This notion of a "Blame America First" crowd is also amusing to me. For those who believe in the existence of this crowd, who should we blame first? Should we blame the "Blame America First Crowd" first?

Deb, thanks for the update.
Grouch, your insipid diatribe is the funnest thing I've read today, that is, except for PALADIN's vapid remarks.

Ortho: If you follow the links provided you can read all the articles, and there are more on the web since this post was published:
"The Westward Venture is contracted by the U.S. Military Sealift Command to carry military cargo to Kuwait. It fired upon the fast boats Thursday after attempts to get the boats' attention failed, defense officials told FOX News.
A Navy security team, armed with M16 rifles and .50-caliber machine guns, was onboard the Westward Venture at the time the warning shots were fired.
The ship was about 50 miles off the coast of Iran when the fast boats approached. The Westward Venture attempted to make bridge-to-bridge contact to warn the fast boats that they were too close.
The Military Sealift Command vessel then blew its whistle and fired flares before finally firing warning shots with the machine gun when the boats came within 100 yards of the vessel.
Bridge-to-bridge communication was established after the shots were fired, "

Ortho, sounds like I pretty much got you pegged just right. An America hating leftist on the same level as Jeremiah Wright.
You should be ashamed accusing our sailors of anything dishonorable. Trigger happy my ass. If they had been trigger happy, the intruders would be at the bottom of the Persian Gulf. I'd like to see how you would act if a bunch of murderous islamic thugs were bearing down on you and threatening your very life.
It is because of these brave men and women that you can spout your vile hateful BS.

Deb, who was it that fired? Did Navy seamen fire? Or did civilians fire?
Posted by: Ortho | April 26, 2008 at 03:40 PM
OK: It seems the Iranians were whining and complaining, saying it was NOT them...
Truth is it WAS Iranians, most likely Iranian Republican Guards, and this is not the first instance like this. The ship carrying US military supplies was in the right, and properly fired on the Iranians.
So the original report stands as reported.

@ Deb: Please let me know what you find out.
@ Grouch: Why is my statement a "classic example of the BLAME AMERICA FIRST crowd"? I was not "BLAM[ing] AMERICA", I was asking Deb a question. Your response is a classic example knee-jerk responses.

Ortho: I'm not sure about this incident, there have been some reports on the Fox News Ticker saying these were not even Iranians. I'm looking for more info.

"Deb, why are the U.S. seamen who patrol the Persian Gulf so trigger happy? Are they trying to start a war?"
The above is a classic example of the BLAME AMERICA FIRST crowd.
