SECURE BORDERS, SECURE AMERICA - THE BASIS FOR A STRONG NATION

THE BASIS FOR A STRONG NATION

7. SECURE BORDERS, SECURE AMERICA.
People who do not take me seriously do so at their own peril. That I am a very accommodating individual does not change the fact that I also have a very quick and nasty temper. I suppose that it goes with combating terrorism – I have to remain calm and collected around my fellow countrymen but can accelerate into viciousness unheard of in polite company when the security of my beloved nation comes into question. I simply do not believe that I owe any quarter to the enemies of the United States. So, for the sake of clarity, accept the fact that you do not want to be anywhere near me when I get pissed.

I have made the foregoing statement because there are people even here within my own country who try to remain compassionate regarding the apprehension and control of our enemies. These are the people who balk at waterboarding those who behead; interning those who dwell in caves to avoid justice; and segregating those who literally explode themselves within our midst. The same people who wish to humanize the terrorists through academic studies and feints of honorable representation also desire to forge a new level of citizenship upon those who invade our sovereign territory under less than despicable intent. I do not claim to be one of these people.

The most fundamental law of the universe is that there are laws to which every element of the cosmos must adhere. This is true whether we are talking about quantum physics, orbital mechanics, or human behavior. Relatively little happens that cannot be predicted to occur at some point in time. It’s just the way that it is and, in my most humble opinion, the way that God intended for it to always be. From the human perspective, following established laws is how we can earn that which cannot be bought. For example, we earn – as much as humans can persuade their Creator – our rights by following laws designed to safeguard our species and that of society as a whole. If we act like a broken cog, we can collapse the wheel itself and therein forfeit our expectations of equality. Even this is subject to some introspection – God vaporized Sodom and Gomorrah because He couldn’t find ten souls who obeyed His commands.

Without established laws to follow, civilization descends into nothing more than six billion people doing as they please. If I, for example, were bound by no such restrictions then the planet would be a very lonely place indeed. Therefore, established laws protect and secure the common interest of the societal function they serve. There are laws representing vast alliances of nations and laws representing tiny communities of seemingly unaffordable housing. Each holds power conducive to its needs. That is, upscale Paradise Homes on the Polluted probably does not possess a first strike nuclear capability should neighboring Ghetto Slums of the Heavily Taxed invade its precious boundaries. Similarly, NATO probably doesn’t give a hoot whether either housing development is discriminatory in its practices. The larger an entity is the more proportionate its responsibilities towards self-preservation are. In other words, state institutions are responsible for provincial duties and national agencies are responsible for territorial obligations.

Here within 21st Century America, however, we have a significant corruption of these basic precepts. We witness the federal government trying to kowtow local and state administrations into conducting national efforts while at the same time we have state and municipal leaders trying to subterfuge national legislation. Nowhere is this more evident than with the process of immigration into the United States, specifically that involving people who intentionally ignore our centuries’ worth of immigration laws and practices. These people may be simple peasants seeking a better way of life free from their corruptive homelands but when they enter our sovereign territory without consideration of our laws they simply elevate their human person above that of the national collective. No single individual is, by themselves, worth more than an entire population – otherwise Christ wouldn’t have offered His life in exchange for the whole of human existence. Such efforts reek of selfishness – that Joe Transient Worker’s future is much more important than the nation which he hopes to have a future within.

If we liken our country to a human body of differing but complementary parts then we can understand this fact a bit more clearly. Our individual lives depend much upon intricate levels of consumption. If we eat too much then we become bloated and ill. On the other hand, if we do not ingest enough nutrition we run the risk of becoming anemic. Similarly, if our body is attack vigorously by bacteria or viruses without the ability to acclimate ourselves to the new threat then we most assuredly will die. The same holds true for our country. If we do not allow the immigration of any people we will become anemic and lethargic, something that will destroy our uniquely American culture. On the other hand, if we allow our national ‘body’ to become infected with those who, like viruses, propagate uncontrollably they will in effect destroy their very host, sacrificing all. Our bodies have endured because we have evolved over the course of millions of years and we are therefore pre-programmed to function along that which works. The same holds true with the United States of America itself.

Ever since Christopher Columbus re-discovered the New World, a chain of events began to mature into what we, in 2008, can relate to in the form of individual liberty and national responsibility. We understood intimately – to the point of revolution – that what worked in Europe did not work here. Our experience is as unique as any of us who make up that collective spirit. We understood that we could not segregate our people into minimal states and provinces as within the Old World from which our people descended. None of these had anything to do with location – which is why Latin America evolved into something resembling European Lite than sub-Rio Grande United States. America – meaning the only nation which uses the term within its official name – grew into what it is today precisely because we were allowed to dispense with that which didn’t work.

The Monroe Doctrine came to be primarily because our leaders figured out a long time ago that if the European powers couldn’t handle Latin America then they surely couldn’t handle the American Experience and so we decided from the earliest that one couldn’t just claim to be an American, one had to become an American from within. A parallel, in my opinion, can be seen from the recent polygamist arrests in Texas – one cannot simply claim to be a Christian without first having been empowered by the Holy Spirit – not personal conviction. All legal immigrants into this country – including both sets of my grandparents – came here for a better life and brought with them vast personal experiences from their homeland, but they educated themselves to become Americans because they respected their host nation’s laws. I will further state that I think that my grandparents voyaged over here with far less capital and prospects than your typical border crasher today. What has changed is a fundamental respect for law and order.

When people lose the ability to adapt, they lose the ability to survive. The timeframe from our initial voyage outside of Equatorial East Africa until we populated the entire planet is comparatively brief in relation to our residence within our natural home. All that it took was one bright individual who threw on an animal skin and thus discovered a way to keep his body comfortable at 98.6° wherever he went. These ancient ancestors of ours first had to adapt to their environments before they sought to offer up their own character. There’s a lesson here for anyone who wishes to immigrate into another nation.

The twelve million or so criminal aliens – so-called because they intentionally sought to evade our law – that currently reside within the United States sought not to adapt their ways to our requirements. I cannot simply show up in the Detroit Tigers’ dugout one day and demand to play even though I feel that I could do no more damage to their efforts than they are already doing themselves. To honestly make the team, I would have to learn a trade that is needed by the Tigers (I have to admit, though, that I was a heck of a catcher in my own league) and work my way up through the minor league ranks to prove my worth. I would’ve very much loved to earn a Big League salary while my wife was dying or now that my father is to aid my family. My intentions are sincere, but just because I could throw out 90% of the runners going to second doesn’t mean that I deserve to be wearing the Old English ‘D’ on my chest.

Uninvited aliens are in the same boat; no matter how much we can sympathize with their intent, we simply cannot allow them to benefit at the cost of those playing by the rules. Nor can we assume that just because 99.9999% of those crossing our borders illegally are not hard-core criminals (again, they are all guilty of breaking federal immigration laws and henceforth felons) that illegal immigration isn’t a serious national security threat. It is. Without getting into details, I can state unequivocally that one person could carry in a one-megaton thermonuclear device contained within a package that you could easily slide underneath your bed. Such a device could easily create millions of casualties within our nation if detonated within a large city. That’s just one person – not a large invading force.

If technology can impart such devastation from small packages – remember, nineteen hijackers resulted in 3,000 deaths – then we must conclude that any level of illegal immigration is a problem. The millions of aliens crossing our border every year may be as patriotic as you and I but that one toting a suitcase nuke has to make the whole crowd suspect. The implications are just too severe to allow ourselves to be deceived into thinking that everyone who claims to uphold the American Dream is as dedicated as those who’ve died for our freedoms. And what of those who are not nuclear terrorists? Those who cross our borders clandestinely are guilty of no less than exploiting loopholes in our national hospitality. They are just as culpable to the crimes as are those who launder money are to drug traffickers or gun runners. Terrorists simply use those seeking a better life to run the gauntlet while they sit back and probe our weaknesses from afar. If our federal forces did not have to run down Joe Apple Picker by the dozens they could be out picking off Mohammed Megaton. This is why I hate illegal immigrants with a passion.

I’m all for those who seek to come here and partake of the American Dream legally. If they’re courteous enough to follow the simplest of our rules, then I am comfortable with them learning to drive, teaching within our schools, or serving within our medical profession. However, if they do not want to respect established laws, then I do not have to respect their claims to human decency. With effort goes recognition. My home has many avenues of entrance but woe to them who try to sneak in through the window. I will not blink an eye or skip a heartbeat if I should have to take down a fellow member of my species if I perceive them to be a threat to my peace and security. The same holds true for those who try to sneak in through the ‘windows’ of our national borders.

Our borders should be made secure enough and our apprehension of violators powerful enough that people would be willing to wait the months or years necessary for legitimate immigration to work its magic. Under no circumstances should any violator of our national sovereignty expect to have their hands slapped. We should treat each and every illegal alien – in the future or those residing here now – with the same disgust that I would treat anyone breaking into my home without first having the courage to confront me at the front door. I am compassionate, yes, but I as I have said I have my violent side too. It’s not that I hate illegal immigrants so bad – it’s that I respect those who respect me so much.

When a friend enters my dwelling I gladly reach out my hand in a hearty handshake. I’ll offer them food and drink and tend to their wounds if needed. On occasion, I’ve been known to hand out funds to aid them within their next task. Frequently, I’ve also been known to teach them a bit from my own repertoire of knowledge and experience. Yet, if that person is not a friend of mine and seeks to siphon off my hard earned assets without my knowing about it – watch out when they are discovered!

Durango: Reply from Mr. Godlewski:

You ask "If these very same statements, verbatim, were being expressed by the Native Americans (Indians), I wonder if he could be as convinced. All immigrants to America since Columbus entered the land illegally and "became the virus that ate up the host" using his own approach at describing the situation."

Yes, I was primarily referring to modern day immigration. However, I will not be drawn into any arguments over Columbian 'invasions' because if you were to study the ship's logs from the period of the Great Exploration you would find that most Europeans did not simply sneak into the New World. In fact, they landed upon the shores only after waiting aboard ship and then eagerly sought out any inhabitants. As for Columbus, he thought that he was in India which Europe already had trading agreements with.

If you want to push the issue, we could all say that Native Americans invaded from across the Bering Land Bridge. However, I'll just state that of the five hundred 'nations' that existed here prior to Columbus, very few (if any) had definable national borders. If anything, Columbus was guilty of ignorance. Illegal aliens today know precisely what they're doing and therefore are guilty of the more severe crime.

Another great installment to this series. One thing that really makes America stand out is the fact that the citizens still have the right to self-defense. That right must be applied to the borders as well. It's your country, just as it's your home that you're protecting. Noone has any right to invade.

Ahh, the fear of G-d. You write as though you know what you're talking about. I guess I should stop asking questions...although you're POV re: technology run counter to programs I know are either in place or being pursued.

Reply from Mr. Godlewski:

I rarely allow a personal point of view regarding any pending legislation because I have yet to see any law serve its original intended purpose. For my own counterterrorism functions I maintain a simple proviso: dead terrorists make me feel a hell of a lot better than live ones. As for illegal immigrants, we need to have a sound national consensus that 1.) they aren't citizens of this nation; 2.) they need to be rounded up and sent away as fast as humanly [not politically] possible; and 3.) those that intentionally aid and abet them are severely punished. To accomplish this, we must shore up our borders and ports and, well, Uncle Sam is just too politically hamstrung to do it. Ergo, we need more 'neighborhood watch' type programs such as the Minutemen to do it and therefore the best legislation would be one that offers a signficant reward (and corresponding punishment to balance it) for the capture and apprehension of illegal aliens.

As to technology; as much as I like advancements, with each improvement comes a comparable way to defeat it. Electronic ID cards are great -- if they're tamper-proof, and they're not.

Sending in threats via cargo containers only works for large shipments (say, a few thousand AK-47s or a dozen human beings). I could smuggle in a three megaton device and not a soul would know about it and I wouldn't have to use cargo containers as a ruse as many criminals do. Our borders are that open. By the way, my personal opinion is that there's probably already at least three rogue nukes residing within the United States. But I digress....

The best way to deal with nukes being smuggled in through cargo containers (which, again, I feel to be a very poor route for terrorists to take) is through the use of radiation-detection painting technology. That is, by spraying paint (I'm using the generic term 'paint' here for the convenience of the layperson) on a section of each container. Should radiation leakage occur (which is the basis for any detection system) then the 'paint' will change color indicating that a radiation source exists within the container. Of course, you understand that the problem here rests not with the technology itself but with those providing the service, product, etc. Again, we're not going to be faced with a Fat Man or Little Boy here. Only our incredulously naive legislature feels that the terrorists must resort to first (or even second) generation nukes. With Flying Plate designs and the like, miniaturization is a given.

Our fundamental problem is still a lack of leadership. In my forthcoming monograph Implementing Innovative Leadership In An Era Of Catastrophic Weapons (which is somewhat delayed due to the rapid deterioration of my father's health) I address these issues -- that our national legislature is predicated on 'managers' who operate according to academic standards and 'committee rule' instead of dynamic leaders who act instead of react to crises. We need people like Douglas MacArthur who wanted to vaporize the communists before they achieved nuclear equality.

Getting back to illegal immigration, the problem is the same as with the forthcoming Chinese Olympics. The time to protest was when the selection committee first granted Beijing the games -- not six years later. American business needs to tap into their 1.3 billion consumers and our government cannot overlook their ownership of half a trillion dollars of our debt. Illegal immigration is quickly becoming just such a 'no return' crisis. The time to act is now and if our politicians cannot come up with a quick solution, then our citizenry must be given free rein (and appropriate liability protection) to take matters into our own hands.

Forget your electronic ID cards and holding employers accountable -- I could put the fear of God into those who support illegal immigration. ;o)

Ron

Hi Debbie,

Mr. Godlewski uses very strong words. His arguments have valid points and are well supported by historical events.

Obviously, he refers to the illegal immigrants coming into America today. Since these are his words, he undoubtedly believes in the soundness of the principles and actions he proposes.

If these very same statements, verbatim, were being expressed by the Native Americans (Indians), I wonder if he could be as convinced. All immigrants to America since Columbus entered the land illegally and "became the virus that ate up the host" using his own approach at describing the situation.

Just wondering. :-)--Durano, done!

borders are the reason they're called "countries"!

i get so sick of the p.c. crowd saying "illegals" are NOT "illegals" if they haven't committed any crimes - THEY'RE HERE ILLEGALLY! how many people are trying to SNEAK into mexico?

Michael, now THAT comment about me parroting Rush Limbaugh proves, among a few other things, that you know absolutely NOTHING about me (and makes me wonder whether the preceding comment of mine extends to your knowledge of things beyond me). You think that I base my comments on Limbaugh? THAT IS TOTALLY LUDICROUS BEYOND ANY NORMAL THINKING PERSON'S IMAGINATION.

What books do you suggest I read to supplement my day-to-day experience?

The Visa Overstay problem was a problem long before Sept. 11th, and Julie Myers was an horrendous choice to head ICE.

Obviously, you didn't see or hear the sarcasm in the Trilateral comment.

Storm.....You'll never learn anything by parroting Limbaugh. Trying turning off both your computer and Fox-CNN-MSNBC.....and hit the books.

Michael, I do not believe that alot of what you wrote can be supported by facts. Prior to September 11th (you refer to them as Suadi attacks, and if that is the case, then I suspect you would concur that the Bush family alignment with the House of Saud through the Tri-Lateral Commission isn't just a conspiracy theory? Prior to September 11th there were an estimated 11 million illegal aliens in our country. Prior to September 11th, the Visa Overstay issue was already a serious one.

On the otherhand, the appointment of Julie Myers to head ICE was a seriously obvious bad choice.

Debbie,

Thank you for a great series!

When reading the above article or something similar, it is important to keep in mind that fact that our Southern and Northern borders were more or less secure prior to the Saudi attacks of 9-11-2001. Afterwards, the order was given for our Border patrol to "stand down", encouraging the present flood of illegal aliens into the United States. Agents of the INS and the Border Patrol were furious about the Stand-down order. The agent's fury however was immediately muted by the sound of the Administration's demolition teams as they dismantled the agencies involved, did away with the existing command structure, sacked or re-assigned the most experienced field agents, and drove out potential complainers and whistle-blowers.

Happy Birthday DHS!

We don't need billion dollar projects to secure the borders. We simply require that the order be given to [once again] "enforce our laws".

Before 9-11, before the DHS, we did not suffer an illegal immigration crisis of this magnitude. We must not delude ourselves into believing that it was someone other than the present administration responsible for the present situation.

Two points to keep in mind;

[1] America's largest border is our network of hundreds of International Airports.

http://www.debbieschlussel.com/archives/2008/04/because_the_stu.html

[2] America was attacked by Saudi Arabia (with the able assistance of other Islamic Nations)

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/babylonbeyond/2008/04/middle-east-lis.html

The "Immigration crisis" can be turned around in a matter of months....without spending an additional red, de-valued, cent.

Until then....remember...

Islam is Peace!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZcCYg48KtI

how inexcusable of our govt not to secure our precious borders Deb!:)

On the top level, of course, I agree with you. Illegal immigration and border security are critical to the future of our Nation. In fact, the integrity of our borders is a serious concern when it comes to counterterrorism. There are, of course, problems. I wonder what you POV is on Proj. 28 and its future. I also wonder about your POV re the Real ID Act. And also perhaps your POV re: the vulnerabilities of the E-passport.

I am of course [fill in emotion] re: your first paragraph.

You've written recently about the threat of nuclear terrorism. I wonder about your POV re: the container security initiative.

I agree with you (and John McCain) about waterboarding (even though his position on torture is elusive). I agree with you on tough policies on deportation of illegals who are caught (but for that matter, how do you feel about the recent DHS position about employers who hire illegals and do not fire them after a "no match?"). I'm on record about closing the border until we have cleansed the Nation of illegals.

Yet, I usually leave the bluster (see 1st paragraph) to my "friends" even though I, too, am involved with combating terrorism and with homeland security.

Just askin'.
