"We're the national army. You're free." That's what the chief of the Columbian operation said to the hostages who were kidnapped six long years ago, as the helicopter headed toward freedom. "You're free." What a beautiful thing to happen as the United States celebrates July 4, Independence Day. Freedom!
Americans Keith Stansell, Thomas Howes and Marc Gonsalves, employees of the U.S. defense firm Northrup-Grumman, had been held hostage by the FARC - the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia - since their anti-drug surveillance plane crashed in rebel-held territory in 2003.

Presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt, three U.S. military contractors, and eleven Colombian police and soldiers were also freed in the rescue.
Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos said military intelligence agents infiltrated the guerrilla ranks and led the local commander in charge of the hostages, alias Cesar, to believe they were going to take them to Alfonso Cano, the guerrillas' supreme leader. (USAToday)
