Jonas Prinkler knelt down alongside the shore, his hands agitated within the water and splashed the cool liquid against his face, pushing backwards somewhat as he realized the idiocy of his actions. “How is someone supposed to cool themselves down while wearing several layers of latex and makeup on their face?”
“You can’t.” Seth smiled awkwardly. “You just have to trickle it in.”
“I know that I’ve asked this question at least a thousand times, but why are we dressing up like Arabs again?”
Seth wrung out his hands, themselves muddied from toiling within the sand and mud beneath his feet. “It’s the same reason; we’re going up against people who will stop at nothing to incinerate our country. These are people who drug little kids to turn them into suicide bombers. People who have no morals, no ethics, no conscience whatsoever! And who do we have on our side? People whose entire knowledge of world events vaporizes as soon as they turn on the latest pop show.
“We – you and I – are going to tap into that world that’s poised against us. We are going into their den and they’re not as tolerate or as compassionate as the good ol’ United States. So, unless you want to star in some beheading video, we need to conceal our identity as best as possible.”
Jonas gave up his attempts at cooling his massive bulk. “So who’s to know who we are? Might not our own side zap us?”
Seth placed his arm gently around his friend’s shoulder. “Where do you think all of those friendly fire incidents come from? Do you think for a moment that the United States is going to come out in public and say ‘Hey, our guys were dressed like Arabs, spoke like Arabs, and were reconnoitering an Arab compound when the Hellfire missile hit. So now we’re going to tell the world where precisely our guys are so we don’t make that same mistake again’?”
“Well, no. Not exactly.”
“Of course not! Probably about ten to fifteen percent of terrorist organizations worldwide comprise our guys. That’s how we find out what they’re up to. And like it or not, you and I, dear friend, are now going to become part of that ten or fifteen percent.”
Pausing for a moment to contemplate the news, Jonas quickly retraced his thoughts to the water and began splashing the artificial coating covering his face.
Seth smiled. “Relax. You’ve got me here to help you.”
“Oh, that makes me feel better. Some damn terrorist will have me in their sights and you’ll be off chasing some stupid redhead.”
“In the Middle East?” Seth stood up and lent a powerful arm to aid his friend. “Not likely. Perhaps if we survive long enough to head on up to Tuscany. But for the moment, we have to act like Arabs, think like Arabs, and, lo and behold, dress like Arabs.”
“I still don’t like it. I’m about as presentable an honest Arab as I am a leprechaun.”
“That’s good, then. You’re not supposed to be posing as an honest Arab. You’re supposed to be posing as an Islamist.”
“Great.”
“It’s easy; just pretend to have no morals or compassion.”
“Me? The guy the entire Pentagon voted in as ‘most likely to drive up Hershey stock’?”
“I made a lot of money on that advice…”
“I’m serious here.”
“So am I. What to survive in the Middle East? Then start acting like there isn’t a sonofabitch on the planet that you care about more than yourself.”
“That works?”
Seth glanced didactically at Prinkler. “Do you really believe that the Middle East would be such a cesspool of malcontents if they were followers of Buddha? Hardly! Muhammad rose to success because he beat his subordinates into submission. They deserved it in my book, but the world didn’t deserve what they did to push their asinine religion further a field.”
A need to change subjects forced Jonas to gaze upon the scenery surrounding them. “Okay. So here we Arabs are. Stuck out in the middle of Crimea and the one guy that we’re supposed to be following into this hotbed of deceit of yours is himself being whisked away towards Italy.” He turned his burly face directly towards his younger compatriot. “Again; why the hell are we wearing more makeup than a pop idol?”
Seth was cornered – a bit. “I have a few contacts which should help us get into the region, by way of Russia. We just need to run underneath the radar a bit while the world learns of two terrible Arab terrorists on the loose.”
“Yeah, right. Two bad ass terrorists. Us?”
“Hell, the way the media loves the terrorists, it might even help us.” Seth began a halfhearted trek eastward along the beach. “Maybe the Nasser Broadcasting Culprits will shower us with admiration?”
“Some prospect.”
Seth continued on his march, brushing the dirt off of his clothing. “Let’s find us a way of moving faster before Johnny Ukraine comes after us with a pitchfork or something.”
Jonas immediately searched around him, his mind tearing through thoughts of imminent demise. “Check.”
