Terror strike on the United States set for October 7, 2008 or simply terror by internet posting?

A posting uncovered in an Arabic language Internet forum is currently raising a few eyebrows in the intelligence community. The single posting, which is presently being scrutinized by intelligence officials, appears to provide detailed instructions for Muslims living within the United States, giving them specific actions to take before, during and after an upcoming attack in the U.S. The communication was discovered by “Archangel,” a well-known independent intelligence analyst active within the intelligence community.

The post was initially published on August 2, 2008 under the title “Commandments [Directives] Before the Strike,” and appears to be a sort of a conflict management guide, or instructions on what Muslims should do prior to the attack, actions that should be undertaken concurrent with the attack, and well as additional instructions following the attack.

The text addressing the nature, location and timing of the planned attack, although specific to the U.S., appears otherwise ambiguous. For instance, the timing appears to focus on the Tuesday following the end of Ramadan, which would be October 7, 2008. The nature of the attack is less clear. Although the author appears to talk about a strike greater in magnitude than the 9/11 attacks and makes reference to the possibility of it being nuclear in nature, the text references to the nuclear aspect of the attack appear somewhat muddled.

In terms of the location of the attack, it is clear that the author identifies both New York, as the financial capital of the U.S., and Washington, DC, as the nation’s capital, as being both desirable and affected. It is interesting that under analysis, the details of “the attack” referenced by the author are nestled within the text of instructions, rather than being prominently placed to serve as an overt warning as seen in the past. The relative subtlety in which the targets and type of attack was referenced is most interesting from a historical and analytical perspective.

According to VERY RELIABLE SOURCES, the reference to a supposed al Qaeda manual on blowing up public buildings is actually a CD-ROM found earlier this year, but believed to have been recorded in 2003. Further, federal authorities indicate no credible evidence that such an effort is forthcoming.

Ignoring credible intelligence (again) would be a huge blunder. But don't you find it interesting that the only "source" of this information is NIN? NIN is not considered a credible source by every single WELL-KNOWN counterterrorism website.

Is the US vulnerable to an attack? Sure it is! But, "restricted access" sources have no such warning. Believing it is one thing. Spreading it, is, well...

It is now the morning of October 6. As you may or may not know, I have been closely following this story since I first read it here on Deb's authoritative site. This is the only terrorist threat warning story that Radarsite has ever covered.
There are several reasons why I chose to follow this particular article, one of which was the proximity and specificity of the date in question. Unlike so many of the nebulous warnings that we are so used to seeing, we will not have to wait weeks or months to see how valid this report is; we will know within two days whether this report is valid or not.

Of course I too looked into the credibility of the source of this info, NIN. What I found was not so clear cut. They are indeed controversial, but they have also been quoted by some fairly reputable authors, such as Daniel Pipes.

Whether or not to follow through on articles such as this one always comes down to personal judgment. I am not particulary swayed by the validation of "professional analysts", who despite their expertise have been of little help with predicting some pretty major events.

Also, with this particular prediction there has been some interesting ancillary evidence that something may indeed be going on here. I have listed this additional info at Radarsite.

Therefore, I have chosen to err on the side of caution and Radarsite has followed this subject closely and updated it every day.

What this episode proves to me is that we are -surprise, surprise --vulnerable. We are in a defensive posture, and we must take every threat seriously if it has any merit whatsoever. This of course makes us susceptible to false information and terrorist manipulation.
So be it. This is the world we live in.

The trusted sources I have developed seem to be taking this particular threat quite seriously, so I have followed suit.

I have contacted the relevant agencies on a few prior occasions and on each and every one of them they assured me that I was doing the right thing. This is the new world we are living in, they told me. We have to stay alert. We have to be willing to report a suspicion even if we know full well that it may never materialize.

If this date of Tuesday October 7 passes uneventfully I will not feel foolish, I will feel greatly relieved.

I am flying on Oct. 7th from across the pond to the US. You can bet, I wouldn't sit in my seat and die without fighting back. I'd make sure the plane landed in the Ocean before it hit another building. They won't use the plane to kill those not on it. That's a fact and I'm sure all people would participate. You know, I looked around the Department of Homeland Security's page, and could not find this at all. Not saying I believe anything they really say either, as they are the real terrorists, but it would be nice to see some primary sources sited instead of a link to some other idiot page.

Katie: Al Qaida doesn't think like we do. Their more radical elements would like to hit us regardless of who's in the Oval Office. But since some of their brethren have been funding Oblahblah's campaign on the internet, it does make some sense that they'd withhold a blow at the US until they see how November 4 goes. If Oblahblah gets elected, then they can hit us, knowing the media will blame Dubya, McCain, Palin, and the rest of conservatism (it's a thoughtless reflex to the media, like dry heaves, and the terrorists know this from watching CNN). Just a passing thought in response to Katie's comment. There are four things terrorists wish to accomplish with each attack.
1-Mass bloodshed
2-Media frenzy
3-Symbolism
4-Economic harm

So, would they not accomplish these four if they were to inflict an attack greater than 9-11 that would, if large enough, postpone the election? (Think of that symbolism)
With our banking in a tailspin, would not economic failure be a possibility?
If it were of such a grand scale would not the media be in a frenzy and would there not be great loss of life?
