With all of the talk lately regarding conservative leadership (or the lack thereof) you would think that conservatism is nothing more than a mere subset of the national polity. First, there was Rush Limbaugh versus President Obama, followed by Rush Limbaugh versus RNC Chairman Michael Steele, then Rush Limbaugh versus Newt Gingrich, and, as always, Rush Limbaugh versus the Mainstream Policía as evidenced most recently by the Newsweek cover feature involving, you guessed it, Rush Limbaugh. Unfortunately, for critics of American orthodoxy, conservative beliefs are not simply a matter of personal involvement; they are the essence of America itself. Conservative values come solely from God and flow within our soul in both intangible (“Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”) and tangible (“the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”) form. Therefore, one does not simply choose conservatism from a list of available options; they discover it from where it has always existed.
Conservative values are what made America the vanguard for success throughout the world. The fire that propels an individual to achieve superhuman feats unattainable by organizations and institutions alone. It is why millions of people routinely follow within the footsteps of Charles Lindbergh whereas we have not been back to the moon in nearly forty years. It is why the Statue of Liberty hoists a torch skywards in New York harbor than an AK-47 in Managua. Without such an illuminating fire, there could be no direction for our soul. As Saint Thomas Aquinas said, nature abhors a vacuum and the spiritless hole excavated by materialism can only be filled by conservative realism. It is the cure for the cancer of Liberalism, which has slowly been devouring our nation since the Left decided that the existence of God was an affront to their deified State.
Those espousing liberal agendas say that the individual is quite incapable of knowing what is best for them or their world. Conservatives know that the individual reigns supreme within the eyes of God – “God created man in his image” (Gn 1:27) – and it was to this individual that the “One God” under which our nation proudly rests gave “dominion over the fish of the seas, the birds of the air, and all the living things that move on the earth” (Gn 1:28). If God Himself entrusted individuals with the care and concern of all of Creation, then how can institutions serve better? Because liberals believe that they are more “enlightened” than God.
Liberalism cannot compete with the God Who created all, so they seek to silence the very thought of an all-powerful, all-knowing, and, most especially, all-loving Creator by secularizing what has been historically a Judeo-Christian nation. They simply ignore the forest for the trees; they do not observe the absolute dominance of Christian heritage and instead focus upon a few words outside of legislature that suggest a mandated “separation between Church and State”. What they seek to enforce is a separation between Individual and Liberty, between Respect and Human Life.
In contrast, conservatives revere the infinite value of human life and the personal liberties that it demands. They march behind the standard of human decency and moral responsibility, always ready to fight for that which is right. They know they cannot define human life and so uphold its existence within its entirety, from natural conception to natural death. Liberals believe that the State can override Creation and so we have segregation between the unborn and born, between the successful and the apathetic, between marriage and the family, and between God and human leadership.
Conservatives understand that happiness – true happiness – occurs along a very “narrow path” and so follow the narrowest route possible –, that which has worked for ten thousand years of societal evolution. They build upon the values of their forebears and keep experimentation to an absolute minimum. Liberals prefer to throw the Obama wrench into every difficulty, seeking a Nirvana in which everyone is guaranteed success, happiness, and, most especially, absolution from conduct. Conservatives entrust; liberals experiment.
For our part, conservatives do not deny the existence of rational scientific progress. We simply understand that even an extraordinary universe of innumerable galaxies and super clusters is still but a wart upon the body of God. Our actions, therefore, place science into its proper context – as the servant of humanity. Liberals prefer to elevate science to its own deity and enslave humans as the servants of questionable agendas.
Our nation has come to a speed bump in the crossroads of civilization. We can remain on the superhighway to the future or we can risk getting lost upon divergent “scenic routes” that merely allow us some semblance to exotic adventure. We can charge ahead in progress by remaining true to our direction, or we can build other infrastructures, “bridges to nowhere”, that will derail advancement for generations to come.
Consider the history of the world, both glorified and vilified. Only those achievements empowered by individuals succeeded in a lasting nature whereas those orchestrated by bureaucracies ultimately failed. There is a lesson here to be learned. That governments restrict by nature – they do not inspire. Nazi Germany, arguably the most efficient federal system ever invented by man, also murdered fifty million souls including six million Jews who did nothing more horrendous than being simply “present”. Contrast this with the exploits of a modest self-employed Jewish carpenter whose mere presence bucked the “system” and inspired untold billions for two thousand years since.
Conservatism is by no means dead in America and I am living proof of this fact. I believe in a well-armed, well-educated, and completely free individual founded upon the moral values of an infinitely powerful God. I am simply His instrument within His Creation and the United States is His canvas upon which I paint my particular swath. If I do not take into consideration the immense portrait already painted before me then I run the risk of damaging the entire masterpiece. I cannot allow that to happen anymore than I could defecate upon a Michelangelo, which seems to be the sole talent of our national politicians.
I therefore throw down the gauntlet, targeted at both the Republican Party and its less-patriotic twin, the Democratic Party, whoever will accept the challenge. I hold you personally responsible for safeguarding our nation’s future as well as protecting our heritage. I will not permit you to sacrifice this great nation of ours through personal greed, ambition, or experimentation. I am on a personal hunting expedition for RINOs – you know who you are – and I will use every effort available to me to make certain that you become as extinct as the Bull Moose and the Whig. I will not permit you to destroy the United States and its Constitution. I owe that much to our founding fathers.
