I Hunt People.

You have to admit, that was an effective way of grabbing your attention. In fact, the reason that you are continuing to read this commentary probably has more to do with your prejudices than my own lethality. Fess up. Ours is a very prejudicial culture and you undoubtedly play an important role within it. See? I have already caught you thinking about racial prejudices, haven’t I? Did I mention anything so far about race, religion, or the other top platforms of opinion bias? Uh huh.
What I am talking about here is our preference for jumping to unnecessary conclusions based solely upon incomplete facts. For example, you undoubtedly have engaged within impulse mathematics as you read the title and concluded that the “I” meant me, the author of this text, that “hunt” meant to shoot or otherwise kill, and that “People” meant those innocent souls surrounding you on a daily basis. The “sum” of your hasty arithmetic was that I actively seek out and kill innocent human beings. This is what I meant by prejudicial thinking.
Progressive liberals are notorious for this, but their malady is by no means innocently acquired as was yours. You read my title and assumed that I advocating cannibalism of a sort. Okay, perhaps not. Still, you inferred that I was implying that I sought out my fellow citizens as mere game. This would be like saying that the headhunters who feast on Monster are also cannibals. Recruiters might be savages, true, but they are by no means cannibals.
Prejudice is as blind as is justice. Perhaps even more so. I will, for instance, announce my belief that any gun control law is both unconstitutional and morally wrong. Those on the Left may challenge my opinion by stressing that the founding fathers’ intent was purely for hunting purposes during a period in which Wal-Mart did not exist. Those on the Right may chisel away at my sensibilities by stressing that the founding fathers intended for us to retain gun ownership so that we could protect our rights and freedoms from tyrants. The truth of the matter is that our founding fathers determined that rights came without instructions. That they were “inalienable” meaning that they were as indefinable as the very concept of our Creator Himself. Everyone knew that God existed; there was no use trying to explain the matter.
The same process pretty much explains the Second Amendment. The drafters of the Constitution undoubtedly knew that we – the citizens of this great nation – might envision a need for firearm possession and so they did not see a need to elaborate any further. Only people who have too much time on their hands worry about such distinctions as hunting, recreation, and self-preservation or pistol, rifle, or shotgun. Those prejudices are a relatively modern invention. Opponents of gun rights generally use such prejudices as weapons in their own right. They try to thwart rational thought through fear and ignorance.
This technique transformed “assault rifles” into modern implements of mass killing. The truth is, during Vietnam it took a combined average of 50,000 rounds from an assault rifle to inflict a single kill upon the enemy but only 1.3 rounds from sniper rifles – essentially modified deer rifles – proving that the effect comes not from a particular weapon itself but from the professionalism of the user behind the device. Our prejudice thus elevates a mere tool into the pantheon of widespread destruction simply because we have an inherent fear of ourselves.
At this point, I would like to argue the most rational of all thoughts. That is, if someone can take something away from you, then they can take anything away from you. If they seek to penalize you for driving a big ol’ SUV, then what makes you certain that that tiny little roller skate that is supposed to aid in our economy and environment will not be eliminated at some point in the future? If the federal government wants control over which doctor you visit, what will stop them from challenging you on what college degree you seek as well?
Since we are discussing prejudices, I would have to argue also that the current government seated in Washington – the President, the Senate, and the House – is the most prejudicial organization on the planet. They seek not only to divide the classes, but also to pit organized (and armed?) thugs (in the form of ‘volunteers’) against us as well. If this is not the work of segregationists, I do not know what is.
Furthermore, the very same government that seeks to dismiss your rights in choosing your own doctor, degree, and type of firearm has also decided to elevate criminal aliens and terrorists to the ranks of bona fide citizens. If not sacrificing your national defense, these actions definitely diminish the value of your own citizenship. Folks, look at it this way. When I earned my promotion to petty officer within the Navy, I made the advancement in the First Increment. This means that I was paid for the new rank as soon as I ironed on my Crow without waiting for accounting to catch up with me. There were only two of us in my command of ~800 sailors who made this distinction at that time, from all ratings and ranks. Everyone else who was promoted had their pay increases drift in at various intervals based upon performance, experience, etc.
I was immensely proud of my achievement. Unfortunately, my division officer decided to meritoriously advance two sailors (one who failed the advancement exam and another who was in drug rehab at the time and so could not take the test) to the same rank as me. What I earned through experience and knowledge, they diminished through ignorance and criminality. Please do not allow our federal government to “meritoriously advance” others in your stead. Do not allow those who break our laws to diminish your own achievements through prejudicial preferences.
I, for one, do not lose any sleep over the inhabitants of Guantanamo Bay, for example. I do not feel that it is prejudicial to safeguard American rights for those actually living here within the United States. If someone in Afghanistan or Iraq or Saudi Arabia for that matter seeks to harm our citizens, then there is nothing inherently “American” that says that we must treat them as wayward pickpockets. I have long since devoted my life to ridding the world of these thugs and, yet, I feel peace of mind whenever I enter the physical presence of my Lord every Sunday.
During my youth, I wanted to become an astronomer. When I studied at Michigan State University many years ago, my major of choice was Astrophysics – one of only two non-pre-Med science students out of a freshman class of 150 – and I feasted solely upon fresh kill venison during my first year in order to study hard and pay my bills. Today, God has brought my talents back down to earth for who can rightfully gaze into the heavens when there are people down here trying to nuke the innocent into oblivion.
Instead of studying supernovae, I study IEDs. Instead of scrutinizing stellar spectra, I sniff out explosive compositions. Instead of peeking through a monstrous telescope, I gaze quietly through a much smaller instrument of optical engineering. Yes, I hunt people. Just not humans…
