We discussed this in class the other day. Unless the U.S. can secure the country as a whole, develop an effective Afghan army free of cultural bias, and institute a government that is free from corruption, ANYTHING that we do is a complete waste of time.

Debbie

R.J. Can we possibly to all of that? Does anyone really think that is possible? Somehow I don't. A government free of corruption? We can't even do that here in the U.S. Sorry to sound negative, but I am.

I was very supportive of the war efforts after September 11, 2001, but as the years go by and I see how the war effort is being handled, how our soldiers are handcuffed with political correctness, I'm leaning toward bringing all of them home and let the chips fall where they may.

Stop all the billions of dollars we send too.

The GROUCH 3 point Afghanistan plan:

1. Withdraw all Americans.

2. Nuke every corner of the place so that it glows in the dark for 1000 years.

3. No big loss. The are all Muslims and they hate us anyway......and if some fallout drifts onto Pakistan or Iran, refer to sentence #1 of point 3.

Deb,

No we cannot. This was also the consensus of my 'The Making of Strategy' class.

I summed everything up as follows:

"To explain Afghanistan, mix one-part medieval religious devotion (we lost that capability during the so-called Enlightenment), two-parts Hatfield-McCoy feud (we lost that knowledge with the rise of Progressivism), and seven-parts the worst real estate on the planet (we lost the value of real property when high-risk mortgages became common place). Sprinkle heavily with primal human emotions.

"Seriously, however, where cultural differences come into play is that Afghanistan represents one place on the planet where, no matter what your cultural beliefs are, they are in conflict with what you will find there. At least that is the best answer that I can provide from afar. "

I also mentioned within another discussion posting that the current (May 2012) issue of C4ISR Journal had a commentary regarding the beef between the American Anthropological Association and the U.S. Army over the latter's Human Terrain System.

Seems we cannot even figure out an adequate way of studying Afghan culture let alone how to defeat it or, at least, build it into a functioning member nation.

Debbie

I've seen several discussions of COIN on military blogs and if it can work, which I do not think it can.

BlackFive says:

QUOTE

The kind of COIN that the US military developed in Iraq was and is a poor fit for Afghanistan, for reasons explored in 2009. The logistical situation doesn't favor most of the COIN methods that are politically feasible for the US military and our coalition.

The main alternative model, which you might call Sri Lankan counterinsurgency, has already been proven unworkable by the Soviets. In this case there wouldn't be a major player working against us (as we were working against the Russians), but as long as Pakistan remains a safe haven that we cannot violate in a serious way, we're not going to be able to make that kind of model work either. (I pass over the moral difficulties with the model, given its political and practical impossibility.)

You can read it all, but it doesn't sound very positive.
