According to the US government National Ocean Service, (NOAA) science has found no evidence that mermaids exist. Why did they feel the need to address the topic of mermaids?
Apparently at least two people had written to the agency asking about the creatures after watching a May 2012 broadcast of Mermaids: The Body Found, on the Discovery Channel's Animal Planet network, a work of fiction but its wink-and-nod format apparently led some viewers to believe it was a science education show, according to the BBC . (Sorry folks, it's just a costume)
I'm assuming these were two adults that made the inquiry, not children. However it is no wonder kids are screwed up when the Discovery Channel presents myth as fact and kids grow up with annimated movies and video games that look better than real life.
Although we don't hear much about mermen, I'm assuming they are a myth too, or do we need the National Ocean Service to make a pronouncement about that too? Perhaps do a study?
Here is a screen grab from the NOAA site:

Nice to see our tax dollar at work pursuing valid scientific discovery.

With the plethora of Bigfoot shows on The History Channel, Area 51 shows on The Learning Channel and/or ancient alien shows on The Science Channel, who could blame anyone for coming away with a false sense of science? Our “reality” show crazed public has absolutely no concept of fact versus fiction.

That study was a waste of money and time.
I know I post about zombies and Star Trek, etc. But I am intelligent enough to believe that it is all fake!
Good grief!

Mystical Time Traveler and Leticia:
Maybe it wasn't clear, but there was no 'study' to confirm the fact that there are no mermaids. So no money was spent on confirming or denying their existence. Their response was to the misleading Discovery channel's program and it's title Mermaids: The Body Found.
RJ:
You are exactly right about the reality shows, they are the downfall of humanity here in the US as far as I'm concerned. I don't watch any of them, never have. I think people confuse what is real and what isn't these days.

Well, leave it to the government -- especially the one being corroded by nobama -- to get it wrong again. Mermaids do exist. It says so on Page 2697 of nobama's hellthscare bill, under the clause that says "penalties are taxes unless saying so gets us in trouble, in which case they is penalties, just like a mermaid is a mermaid, unless it's a manatee or Helen Thomas. Then it's...ewww".

The government lies once again! They cover up anything from the publics eyes. I believe there are mermaids, bigfoot, ghosts. The government can go to hell!
