Two suicides have recently generated a lot of internet buzz, one in America and the other in Israel. There is much to be said about the pathetic, self-absorbed behavior of those who commit suicide and the fact that they have chosen to put themselves into the frame of mind leading to it. There is another issue however, and that is the MSM and how they have responded.
Suicide is not something to be exploited, nor is drug-addiction and alcoholism. Yet that is exactly what the MSM (main stream media) is doing – exploiting this woman’s death. The suicide of an Israeli Mossad agent is another case of exploitation but in this case it provides an opportunity to also attack Israel. From the MSM perspective – what is not to like?
The web (except for the sane conservative sites) are now full of acclaim for Mindy McCready’s musical talent following her suicide at age 37, just one month after the father of her 9 month old son committed suicide. Now I had never heard of her, or him, as my knowledge of country music is shall we say “limited.” But the type of music they were involved in matters little – what does matter is that two young children (her older son is only 6) are now orphans.
While the comments have been reserved and focused on prayers for her family or praise for her musical talent the facts remains the same. The facts include serious alcohol and drug problems, the facts include the reality that father of her youngest child had already committed suicide. But that did not stop this pathetic human being from the most self-destructive and self-absorbed behavior possible.
Conflicting accounts are that the state has taken the two children into custody, and that the grandmother (Cindy McCready’s mother?) has custody of the older child. If the latter is true it is possible that she will get custody of the younger child as well. I am sorry for these two children, but at the same time relieved that there will never be a custody fight between her and anyone else. What will happen to these two children? Who knows? Is the grandmother’s custody better? Who knows? Most certainly otherwise she would not have been given custody to begin with – yet, one must wonder about her parenting skills if her daughter committed suicide. This is not the behavior of a responsible adult but then alcohol and drug addiction are not the behavior of responsible adults. This is the behavior of a selfish, self-absorbed woman who was evidently a pretty poor parent, but none the less by committing suicide she has deprived her children of having a mother.
The other suicide was that of an Australian-born Israeli, Prisoner X, who made aliyah (immigrated to Israel) and became a Mossad agent(you don’t join, they ask you to join). He had married an Israeli woman and also had two children. They now are left fatherless. Now spying is a dangerous business and can lead to a very short life, but usually it is the enemy who causes the death of a spy. So why did Prisoner X commit suicide? Various answers will be given, including the possibility that he had become a double agent for Dubai. But the real answer may be more universal and boils down to this: suicide is generally committed by those who have no purpose.
Fishel Jacobs, who served many years as an officer in the Israel Prison Services explains at http://www.americanthinker.com/2013/02/prison_suicide_and_faith.html that many prisoners attempt suicide as a way to disrupt prison officials and/or as a way to gain attention. These usually do not succeed in large part because they don’t intend to commit suicide. American Thinker has in this article published the only thing I have seen of value on the internet because it addresses the reasons why people attempt suicide in prison. The MSM has simple used the suicide of Prisoner X to attack Israel.
Other sources have pointed out that Prisoner X was a leftist. This makes sense, religious people and people on the right are usually positive and believe in something greater than themselves, an their lives have a purpose. Not so for the left, which has for the most part confused itself with God. Jacobs points out that there without purpose there is only futility, but with purpose there is fortitude.
Mindy McCready and Prisoner X chose their paths. She chose to do drugs and alcohol. She chose to have two children, and she chose to kill herself. Likewise Prisoner X chose to join the Mossad, to become a double agent, and he chose to kill himself. I have no sympathy for either of them. But I do have sympathy for their children, whose self-absorbed parents made decisions which will hang like a dark cloud over their children forever. But, as someone who also had a dark shadow (no, not suicide) over her life, I know that these children have a choice and that they can chose a life with purpose.
In the Book of Deuteronomy (30:19) it is written “Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live.” While their parents chose death, there is no reason these children cannot chose life, that they and their offspring may live.
