GoneWithTheWind

I enjoyed 20 years in the Air Force and I even participated in the development of the F-15. Military hardware is expensive and makes an easy target for any political person who would rather spend the money elsewhere. I can assure you that the same things were said about the F-15 and F-16 that are now being said about the F-22 and F-35. I might add that there were also Air Force wide groundings of most planes early in their development. To answer the basic question of "is the money wasted?" You only have to ask yourself do you want to prevent war and/or win wars if they happen. If you are OK with losing the next attack/war on the U.S. or are OK with encouraging an attack on the U.S. then by all means don't spend money on advanced military hardware.

There can be no doubt at all that sooner or later WW III will happen. It could be Russia, China or just an expansion of a local war such as the Middle East. When it happens, that is when it becomes a full blown nuclear war we will fight it with whatever we have on hand and not with anything on the drawing board or yet to be developed. That in a nutshell is the price of peace; the yearly and ongoing cost to keep our military strong enough to deter war if we can and to win war if we cannot deter it. It is our choice. Other countries are waiting for a show of weakness.

Dear "GoneWith the Wind"

The F-15, F-16 & F-18 series were not designed by "International Committees" nor did the US rely on foreign manufacturing by 3rd world Islamists (Turkey).

The F-35's failings are the same as those of the Euro_Fighter and for the same reasons.

GoneWithTheWind

On the one hand I believe everything we use/consume should be manufactured here in the U.S. On the other hand trade and realities of business has changed the world in ways we cannot control. If the choice was either you accept some of these things that irritate you or the new fighter does not get built then I guess we are stuck with the conditions in place. So it sounds as though you object to the weapons systems because they are not 100% American or you assume or believe that because they are not 100% American that they are more prone to failure. But none of this matters unless you have a solution. If you find some way to bring "built in America" to a vote you can count on my support but otherwise we have to move on and make this work.
