“In this regard, security personnel cannot eliminate consideration of martial applications – defense, warfare, intensity, etc. – for the sole reason that “the other guys” will not refrain from inflicting the most horrific damage possible upon other human beings. This does not mean that security personnel should adopt the same measures. No sane individual blows him or herself up to promote a cause anymore than he or she beheads another to support a particular occupation. At least not within the context of benefiting society and all individuals making up such society. Security personnel, however, can – and should – employ lethal force if it remains the only means available for stopping a homicide bomber from detonating an improvised explosive device (IED) or a narco-trafficker from beheading an individual.”

Президент Путин, почему российские мужчины любят видеть себя в нагом? Now that I got that off my chest (no pun intended), there remains more important things in life than whether Russian tyrants like to disrobe in front of cameras. It does not make any difference whether Vladimir Putin likes to fish and ride horses while showing the world that one cannot get a decent tan in Russia or that the ousted president of Ukraine – what’s his name? – likes having portraits made of himself sitting in the buff. Frankly, I do not believe that anyone gives a crap whether I bear a few extra pounds or that Vladimir Putin likes to show off his KGB-financed abs. In the eyes of God, appearances do not matter; actions do (Matthew 6:2-6 New American Bible). In this regard, Vladimir Putin has much recompense ahead and I, truthfully, feel sad for this, dare I say, archetypical Russian narcissist.
My paternal ancestors came from Russia-occupied Poland and Poles since developed their nation into a model for oppressed peoples everywhere. An antagonistic Moscow could not defeat the Poles’ sense of family, faith, and freedom. Russia, conversely, has evolved into poster child for corruption. Russia’s men abandon their wives and children without care. Russian men find more solace in a bottle of vodka than in Christian ethics. And more importantly, Russia’s political and economic systems are tyrannical in nature. Most Russians today harbor a quality of life far beneath even the poorest of Americans. Perhaps this explains why President-apparently-for-life Vladimir Putin likes going shirtless. Russian men are inherently conditioned for having the shirts literally torn off their backs. Could this be why Russia is called the Bare, er, Bear?
When I, myself, look into the mirror, I gaze upon a far different animal staring back at me. I see a mule – a stubborn animal that willingly serves without much complaint. It may take me a few moments to get going and I do snort out a thought or two in the process, but in the end, I do what is required of my service. Yet, I also see a graceful swan. More than anything outside of God, I remain devoted to both my family and my country. For instance, my precious Sara died 123 months ago and, yet, I still dream about her several nights per week. I accept God’s Plan, but that does not mean forgetting those who inspire and motivate me long after their passing. I still think of my native-born Russian but Polish nevertheless grandfather even though I was barely a month old when he passed. I also see a sheepdog staring back at me from the bathroom mirror. Kind, loveable, perhaps a bit shaggy, but with a bite that can chase away any wolf – or bear. I am, after all, a decidedly ordinary American.
You see, Americans represent a far different breed than most people expect. True, Hollywood, the music industry, and false first impressions have left our culture decimated in global opinion, but the truth remains the truth no matter who – or what – conspires to create false gods in the minds of humanity. We overwhelmingly believe in God, family, and fighting for the underdog. Russia, to the contrary, seems lacking in God, certainly abandoned the family in the courts, and, well, cannot claim to fight for the underdog when Moscow creates far more underdogs than it does successes.
Now, Putin’s Russia has literally pulled a page from Nazi Germany by invading sovereign Ukraine under the guise of protecting Russian-speaking citizens in that country. Moscow did not like it when Poland fought to defend Polish-speaking citizens in Russia. Yet, Russia lost three times against Poland. In fact, I would argue that in the modern era, Russia has never won a war on its own accord. The “Great Patriotic War” would certainly have been lost had it not been for the West and its support. Yes, Russians fought bravely during the war, but the fact that Russians were immediately shot by their officers upon retreat certainly places an asterisk within the record book. And what to make of the tens of thousands of German women brutally raped by Russian soldiers during the march towards Berlin?
In the words of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, “The end does not justify the means. Thus the condemnation of an innocent person cannot be justified as a legitimate means of saving the nation” (Paragraph #1753). America does not intentionally harm individuals, but apparently, Russia does. Its whole Spetsnaz Alpha Group rests upon the precept of destroying opposition – abroad and at home. The whole context of invading Ukraine – with illegitimate solders to boot – under the guise of protecting Russian citizens remains impossible to support. Either, there are Russians living within Ukraine, which places them under the laws and regulations of the government in Kiev, or there are Russian-speaking Ukrainians, which, at best, places their support of Russia as subversive. If Russians in Ukraine fear for their lives, then take them home! Do not acquire territory a la Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein.
What makes Putin’s actions so much more fraudulent and tyrannical remains with the blatant series of lies emanating from Moscow. The entire world can see what is going on and the only ones duped are the Russians themselves. When one removes oppositional discussion, one can literally get away with murder. And this appears to be what the Kremlin is doing. Except that this time, unlike in Afghanistan, the Ukrainians took back their own government by dismissing the “leader” that spent more time nailing innocent owls to his wall than protecting those whom he served.
Now, I really have nothing against individual Russian people. They provided the world with great artistic grace. Russian women are amongst the most beautiful in the world. Unfortunately, much of this love for beauty has not transformed into stable governments. I cannot imagine the last time that Russia held an efficient government as the Czars, Soviets, and now Putin failed to enrich the citizenry. Towards this end, Russia will never be a “great power” until it can stand on its own merits – not the backs of its people.
History has proven that the planet remains populated with bear hunters – individuals and groups that can take down the largest predators with the minimalist of ideas and weaponry. Czarist extravagance devastated Russia’s morality. Soviet dominance destroyed Russia’s soul. Now, going down for the third count, Moscow seems destined to destroy Russia’s very existence. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, “Не впадайте у відчай, хоробрий українців, вашій землі повинні очистити себе не тільки з Росії, але і від брудні лідерів, які є інструментами Путіна.” My Ukrainian might be a little shaky, but not my resolve to protect the dignity and integrity of innocent human lives – by any means necessary.
