Now it begins – the war we have been expecting. Will it be the end? Or the end of the beginning? Or the beginning of the end? Of everything? Or of the confrontations between Israel and its murderous neighbors? Who knows? But once again Israel finds itself reluctantly at war and this time it is determined to win and win big by wiping out Hamas. The war was prompted to a large extent by the kidnapping and murder of three Jewish teens (one, a dual American/Israeli citizen) by Hamas. After weeks of searching for them (and finding LOTS of illegal weapons in Palestinian territory) the bodies of the three boys were found.
Then there was a fourth murder of a teen age boy – this one was Arab, suggesting revenge. Although the first news accounts revealed that he was gay, the MSM narrative soon began to claim that the perps were Jewish, which is highly improbable. The boy was burned to death – a method unknown among Jews but typically Muslim. In fact it has been well known for years, even in the West, that honor killings are commonly done by burning the victim (male or female) to death, and if the boy was gay as many reports have claimed, then this was almost certainly an honor killing. The timing suggested a revenge killing, however that is most unlikely. Jews do not burn people alive and they do not burn corpses – Jewish law and traditions forbid this and make it totally abhorrent and unthinkable to Jews. But none of this matters to the Arab street who first celebrated the kidnapping and death of the three Jewish boys, and now are whipped into a frenzy due to the death of the Arab teen, a death caused almost certainly by one of their own.
All of this was a prelude to war, but there is more. Although some leaders in the Muslim world have urged ceasefires during the Islamic feast of Ramadan (this year from June 29 to July 27) there are many examples of battles in Ramadan being carried out during and since the times of Mohammad. Ramadan, like any religious holiday of any religion, helps to focus its adherents on the practice of their religion. So does religious fasting. And Islam commands its followers to fight against all non-Muslims as their religious duty. Now we have a war between Israel and the Muslim world at a time when they are most aware of their “religious” duties. A war that is the result of years of Hamas firing rockets into Israel from Gaza, Muslims kidnapping and murdering three Jewish teenagers (and years of other kidnappings and/or murders), and Muslims burning to death a gay Arab teen-ager.
The war is currently located in the south of Israel along the Gaza border. It seems to have begun Monday night (Monday afternoon EST) (some reports say early Tuesday morning), and is called by Israel “Operation Protective Edge.” Israel has called up 40,000 reservists although it is still unknown if a ground offensive will be used. About 100,000 households in Gaza have been contacted (by Israel) and warned to move away from the border, this suggest an imminent ground invasion, yet, for many reasons Gaza, unlike Judah and Samaria, is not a good place for a ground invasion.
It is often said that Israel usually wins the wars and loses the peace. Israel lost the war when the IDF (Israel Defense Force) was led by a liberal and this lead to a victory by Hezbollah. Of course Israel always loses the peace when there is a liberal and sometimes when there is a conservative in power, but this is not the point of this story.
Strangely the White House is saying that Israel has a right to defend itself – but that may be simply because they know that Israel will win (the briefest and best analysis is here) and with so many other things going wrong for them they need to be on the winning side for once. It may also be that Obama will change his mind, or come out tomorrow expressing some fuzzy thought on the issue. Or he might simply be too busy playing golf or pool to say anything at all. Nothing would surprise me at this point, anyway the war may take America’s attention off its’ southern border before things get any worse, as they most certain will.
All this leads me to wonder what will John Kerry (the only American gigolo to become Secretary of State) do? Will he continue to insist that Israel negotiate with the Palestinian Authority and Hamas? Or will he flip-flop and stand (or pretend to stand) with Israel? Doesn’t this war make his previous attempts to “make peace” look rather foolish? (Yes, I know, he always looks foolish). Comedian Dennis Miller may have had the best solution to the problems of the Middle East – he suggested that America drop ‘the big portobello.’ But we had better hurry – before Iran attempts to drop one on us, or Israel.
