Kirsten Powers was always an enigma to me, she articulates her positions on the left but has never been shy about where she stands on anything, including her disagreement/s with those on her side. Most of those on the left will defend their side despite every lie and every deception, they are willing to say the most bizarre things in support of obvious dishonesty. Refreshingly, Kirsten Powers never did that and her frankness is part of her appeal.
I first became aware of her sometime between 4 and 8 years ago and always found her reasonable, even when I disagreed with her. It made no sense, but she is always likable, and she seemed to fit in on Fox News, the only place I ever saw her as she appeared there as a Democrat Commentator. In contrast, some Fox News Democrat Commentators treat it as hostile terrority. Over time I discovered she was also a columnist at, of all places, The Daily Beast. Despite this she seemed rational and responsible, but my motto is to never judge. Only when I saw her on TV or met someone named Kirsten (or Powers) was she even on my radar.
Today I discovered why she was such an enigma and it has to do with who she is and how when a myth was shattered in her own life she in turn shattered another myth. The myth she shattered is that someone who speaks for the left could ever seem honest, that they will always defend the left no matter how unreasonable. The myth shattered in Kirstin Powers life was the atheist myth that there is no God. As she herself put it, “Of all people surprised that I became an evangelical Christian, I'm the most surprised.” This has happened in the last seven years, see here.
Will Kirsten Powers remain in the Democrat Party? It hardly matters, but she matters and whatever course she takes it will be for the good. She might maintain her allegiance to the party and continue to change some of her positions to more traditional ones in opposition to it. Or she might just realize that the Democrat Party is not the party it once was, and that it is a poor fit with her newly held beliefs. It hardly matters overall if she stays or goes. We need good people within the Democrat fold and outside it. She is one of the good people.
